My Wife took a job in New Zealand and I left most all of my power tools at home with the goal of mastering at least some hand tool skills. Subscribe and see how this journey goes!
Thanks to Peter Follansbee and Roy Underhill for the idea for this Bible Box which will be my birthday gift for my wife. It's based on boxes that Peter has created (half sized in my case) and a simple design Peter has one his one DVD.
Peter Follansbee is a master carpenter that specializes in 17th century furniture/tool reproduction. It's well worth looking into his blog and into his videos he has for sale.
The first time I saw Peter was on Roy Underhills Woodwrights Shop TV show and outside of splitting my own oak I knew that I wanted to someday try to replicate this box. Peter has been on Roys show a number of times and is always fascinating to watch.
This Bible Box was made from one board from a big box store and most of it only took about 6 hours to complete not including the finish. This was also my first 'real' attempt at carving and having watched Peters one carving DVD 20+ times this actually went way more smoothly than I could have imagined. Just make sure you're tools are sharp (and be safe with them!).
I used a steelwool and vinegar solution to age the wood before finishing with shellac.
