I know it's a little early for Mother's Day, but I wanted to get it done now.
This is my entry for:
Shane’s Hobby Shop Mothers Day Contest 2016
/ shaneshobbyshop
I took some Padauk and Cherry and ripped them down to 1/2" x 13/16" strips and glued them up. After the glue was dry I cleaned them up and ran them through the planer. Then using the table saw I ripped 45 degree angles on all the pieces.
Then I just glued them up like a box. I measured the inner dimensions to cut some pine pieces to fill in the top and bottom. For the top I used a forstner bit to drill a 1-5/8" hole for the stems.
I sanded down to 220 and cleaned it off with some mineral spirits. I applied 3 coats of a satin clear coat. Off camera I made a little wooden tag out of 1/8" ply and painted it white. Then I stenciled on "Happy Mothers Day".
Then I made the flowers. On camera I was using a knife to make the smaller flowers, and off camera I use a 5" draw knife to make some of the larger flowers. I dipped some of them in a water/food coloring bath. Some I let soak a little more than others
