Even here in super liberal Washington state they have done away with this nonsense. Smog and safety checks every year is an additional cost on vehicle owners. If someone is driving an unsafe car a police officer can pull them over.

Yeah if a mechanic is going to those lengths for an inspection, they’re looking to get work out of it. I’ve never had anyone, not even the official inspection stations go so far as to check tires

They don’t check the tire pressure, they look at the tread as they walk around the car checking the lights. It’s not rocket surgery to glance at a tire and see that it’s bald.

I took my top of the line car for state inspection and the shop said I needed new front struts; turned out the struts were big dollar hand made German Bilstein in perfect condition, so the shop owner was basically wanting to steal my struts and make me pay for them to be replaced with cheap junk, thinking I would just agree to get the inspection passed; problem for him was that I'd recently had my suspension checked by a specialist shop and had their report, so his scam attempt failed.

Yup that happened to a friend of mine. His dad offered to take his car to get fixed since he works all the time. He took it to Christen Brothers and my friend lost $6 grand and new parts because of them. (His dad had access to his account.) His dad is from an older generation who stops after a 2nd offer instead of looking for a much lower price apparently. (Volkswagen was charging $12 grand) Always keep looking, my friend eventually found a trustworthy mechanic that only charged him $900 to fix everything in the car, no negotiating required. It runs perfectly now.

Another solution in search of a problem. Mandatory state safety inspections look and sound good, but the reality is that they actually do very little to improve "safety" on the roads. They're just a money grab by the state and inspection stations.

@Fjb Atyoutube1 The point was that state inspections do little to protect other drivers. I would like to see this statistics for accidents caused by mechanical failure versus drunk driving versus distracted driving. I would guarantee you that there’s probably a 1000% increase in accidents related to drunk driving or distracted driving. I bet accidents caused by mechanical failure is less than half a percent.

Christian Brothers or making a lot of money selling parts to people and labor I've been a mechanic over 50 years, inspection is a big racket. Also emission inspection is a joke. Back in the seventies I've seen high-compression hot rod engine on the street with the good fuel pass the inspection, a brand new Cadillac with catalytic converters failed the inspection. The reason for this the high-compression engine with good fuel will burn it completely in the combustion chamber before it would go into the exhaust. Low compression engines with this sorry fuel we have today has to regenerate the unburned fuel in a Cadillac converter before it leaves the exhaust.

For goodness sake we ask people not California our state, how about we don't Ohio our state either. Have you ever driven through Ohio and seen some of the total wrecks they allow to be on their roads? Not just the blue smoke from their exhaust but fenders that flap in the wind, doors you can see through to the interior and tires so bald you may be hit at any time by pieces flying off them. We already see vehicles that are borderline here since they have eased certain inspection points like the damned high intensity LED headlights that are improperly aimed and blind oncoming traffic. How about we look at not removing inspections but in fact tighten them up and add a few more critical safety points to them! How long before catalytic converters start disappearing since no one will be paying attention any more?

I SUPPORT SAFETY INSPECTIONS but I think they should move to a graduated system. There should be two levels as well. Maryland only has one inspection, and that is when you buy a car and need to register it. It is a very strict inspection. Texas should adopt that inspection for the same purpose, but only at time of purchase when you go to register it in your name for the first time. Where my scenario of graduated comes into play is, a safety inspection, more general but less strict, should be required after that. After one year, you are given a 1 year sticker if passed. After that, you get a 2 year sticker. After that, 3 year sticker. Three years max. Any conviction of a equipment violation, a judge can order the DMV to reset your inspection to one year and start all over again. Secondly, if you fail inspection and return and fail again, then next time you pass, it gets reset back to 1 year. You say inspection is such a burden. If you programmed people into thinking they would get a reward for maintaining their cars, more people would pass and more people would take more care of their cars.
