In today’s episode we speak with Ross Harwell about his path from musician to audiologist to hearing instrument manufacturer to professor in Conestoga’s Hearing Instrument Specialist Program. Ross discusses how he approaches teaching diverse groups of students (some straight out of high school and others who’ve been working as physicians and surgeons overseas for more than 15 years) and why becoming a hearing instrument specialist is a “weird” profession that combines physics, languages, health care, retail, and communication.
Ross shares with us a lesson about resonance from his Acoustics course: how sound reacts when you put it through a tube. To demonstrate how this works, he uses a guitar, a trombone, a tuning fork, and a glass of water. He also discusses the power of role-play simulation assessments that allow students to bring together their cognitive knowledge, affective competencies, and psychomotor skills.
