Personally, I really grew to love The High End of Low. Born Villain had a few decent songs on it, but didn't do much for me. The Pale Emperor, however, is a masterpiece. I love every song on it. It's the best thing he's put out since the trilogy by far.

Interesting review, i like a lot of what you had to say about Manson, but when artists grow and change there's an opportunity to embrace that and get something new from them. I felt your thoughts on preferring Manson as the controversy figure missed the point a little. This is a different era and if Manson was still scaring the "christan soccer mums" (love the way you put that XD) it would feel stale. Two of my favorite moments where the lyrics from Mephistopheles and his vocal throughout Birds Of Hell, i found your criticism interesting, but maybe a tad over-thought, sometimes you can get more out of music if your not comparing it to something else. But anyway great video as always bud :-)

This is easily Manson's best work since Holy Wood. Golden Age is by far his worst record. It's so hallow and processed. The lack of good instrumentals and redundant lyrics make it a chore to get through for me. The High End of Low almost felt like a repeat of Golden Age when it first came out, but it does have a few stand out tracks and much better instrumentals overall. Contrary to popular opinion, I actually really enjoy Eat Me, Drink Me. It certainly takes time to grow on you but the entire vibe of the record is really interesting. You just have to get past the slightly cringe worthy lyrics found on the opening track. Just A Car Crash Away, Evidence, and the title track are all excellent. Born Villain was a decent effort. Much better than High End and Golden Age. It has some really heavy hitting tracks but it does lack excitement overall. Manson is not the singer he used to be and it shows greatly on that LP. Luckily, Manson found a much better direction for his weary vocals and introspective lyrics on The Pale Emperor. Makes me happy because Holy Wood and Mechanical Animals are some of my favorite albums of all time and I think Marilyn Manson is an incredibly interesting person. Anyway... Just venting some thoughts here. TLDR - The Pale Emperor is a great album. Eat Me, Drink Me is under appreciated. High End of Low and Golden Age are low points for me. Manson is always interesting. Highly recommended tracks off of The Pale Emperor: - Slave Only Dreams To Be King - The Mephistopheles Of Los Angeles - Deep Six - The Devil Beneath My Feet

One thing I want to add: When Manson is shocking, people talk shit and say he's trying too hard... and when he does something differently people say he does not matter because he isn't shocking anymore. It makes no sense. How is it that crap like Cannibal Corpse gets praise from some of the same people? Most extreme metal music DEPENDS on shock or trying to be shocking. Look at the album covers and song titles. I mean I like some extreme metal but most of it sounds the same and has no balls to do something different because they'd lose fans. Bands need to stop catering to their audiences. Slayer should make a fucking JAZZ album just to piss off the close minded metalheads.

I felt like this was his most cohesive record since Holy Wood. I know I'll never see the all out glam-space rock Bowie-esque absurdity of Mechanical anymore (which is my all time fav of Manson and my first ever record I bought) but I really dug this record. It has a very smooth and groovy sexy sound, and to me it's reminiscent of Manson's first forays into warped sex appeal with MA, versus the brash industrial-metal sounds of AS and HW. I tend to agree that Manson slumped into the aughts, but by no means there aren't any amazing tracks sprinkled throughout that decade. Looking forward to Say10.

You have to remember what mm said during an interview after he released the pale emperor “i dont want to be a warrior anymore”. Its the reason why he doesn’t want to get himself into politics or the media or ppl anymore. He’s already tired of speaking about topics like this. Everything has been said by him already but yeah they are new things to talk about. But the manson from back then was different and he seemed to want to change the world. But i feel like its more of a motivation of something he lacks right now. Its true he did have a chance to talk about trump but im guessing he didn’t feel like being the warrior he used to be. Remember when on stage he used to say “fuck George bush” him knowing that George bush wasnt gonna do good to society back then.

As a younger person (19) i have to say i feel very disinterested in Marilyn Manson, to me, his image was never threatening or dark or dangerous, it did not shock me nor did it intrigue me. I frankly thought that he looked hilarious, because when i became more interested in music, his relevance and had already faded, and his image had just become part of pop-culture. I still do not think much of music though, it is not awful, it is just not my cup of tea. That has nothing to do with my age though, because i do enjoy other bands that came out around the time that he was at his most relevant.

Matt Murray I was not going to reply to this, because it is annoying, accusatory, and quite frankly ridiculous. I am going to do it though, because i you spent time writing this and i am not going to be petty enough to delete your comment, regardless of how misguided it is. I never said any of of those things, you are taking everything out of context and blowing them way out or proportion. I simply stated that his image never gave me any incentive to care about him as an artist or to explore his endeavours. That is not the same as choosing to dismiss MM's music because of his image. I don't care if you or anyone else like him, i don't assume anything about you, it is just music for christ sake. It is not that i don't get it, it just never impacted me, there is a big difference there. I understand the appeal, does not mean it is appealing to me. While his success was largely due to his music, image definitely played a part in it. Image and narrative is essential to how we perceive the artist and value their body of work. That goes for everything from black metal to avant-garde music to modern pop. Also, people still care about nonsense, whether they are controversies or incredibly petty shit, it is still always a part of the musical discussion. That goes for "alternative" music too (seriously, that term is cringeworthy), there are so many petty motherfuckers out there, you have no idea.

Though I can kind of understand where you're coming from and certainly respect your opinion, I think it's contradictory to say your favourite album is Holy Wood and then go on to say that you don't think Manson is much of a poet. The lyricism on that particular album is amazing and extremely intelligent and witty. For me, one of the greatest aspects of his music, and what made me fall in love with his stuff is the lyrics first and foremost. I don't know, I just have a hard time making sense of that one statement.

I am a super fan. I see MM on tour at least 4 times each time he comes around. Usually the NM, NV, CA, AZ circuit. Manson has evolved as a musician throughout the years. I think it's necessary for a performer to reinvent themselves to advance in their career. I love the album. I love him musically, artistically and think he is brilliant. I do, as a fan, however, feel sort of rejected. As his career advanced through the years first there was Lunchbox (wanna grow up, wanna be, a big rock and roll star) , then there was Mister Superstar (I know that I can turn you on, I wish I could just turn you off, no I never wanted this) and now The Mephistopheles of Los Angeles (I don't know if I can open up, I've been opened too much). I feel these are all not only internal for himself but also reveals his current attitude toward fans. I think the deal sealer for me is the no meet and greet this tour. Back when he wrote Lunchbox, I don't think he realized what he was asking for. Now, that he has "sold his soul to LA," Well, ya kind of did on purpose? This album also reflects the fact that his girlfriend is a hot mess. "Don't bring your black cloud to bed, when I wake up, it best be gone, or you better be dead." Doesn't sound like a happy guy to me. His better albums were produced when his current lover wasn't a train wreck. (He's my "hall pass." I'm freakin' obsessed with him, so, maybe I'm biased and a little jealous, ok, fine.) I have to restate that I love this album. I love all of his albums. The High End of Low is actually my favorite, strangely. He's nearing 50. Yeah, we were all awesome back when we were on drugs. Yeah, we were. .... Now, yeah, I get it, you're slowing down and sober. Me too. His best concert, hands down, Guns, God and Government. It bothers me when "fans" say "oh, he's not like he was in the 90s." Yeah, because it's not the 90s anymore. My husband who majored in Greek and Latin and who is also Catholic is always saying "oh, he's just stabbing religion and mythology and whatever yadda." This same man is going with me to the Vegas show. He doesn't even own a black t-shirt...... He states that he hopes that Manson plays Sweet Dreams, Tainted Love and Personal Jesus. I feel the opposite. I HATE IT WHEN HE DOES COVERS!!! I wish every concert wasn't 1. Beautiful People. 2. Mobscene. 3. The New Shit. 4. Person Jesus. 5. Disengaged. 6. Tainted Love. 7. IHA. 8. Sweet Dreams. etc etc. I wish it was more like.... Minute of Decay, Murderers are Getting Prettier Everyday, Breaking the Same Old Ground, Devour, Pretty as a $, Blank and White, Four Rusted Horses, Wight Spider, Spade, Eat Me Drink Me, The Rabbit, The Last Day on Earth, Astonishing Panorama..., Mister Superstar. Not, the same songs over and over and over. Gah. I have only played MM in my car for a good 7 years or so. I never ever get sick of him. SO feeling rejected sucks a bit. As for the album, I like it. I will end up liking it more over time, as with all of his albums. Tangent. Sorry.

I have to agree for the most part. I've been a fan of Manson since around the time Mechanical Animals came out. I enjoyed moving backwards through his releases, and came to love Portrait, Smells like Children, and Antichrist Superstar on their own. I was thrilled when Holywood came out, and that easily rocketed to my top slot for favorite Manson album where it probably still sits now. Since then, however, I've felt he's lost direction a little bit. The spitting social commentary that made me love him so much gave way to more personal and relationship-driven lyrics which I didn't feel had as much weight behind them. Even in his older albums, songs with more of a personal edge were still fit into a larger context. Coma White is a very personal song, but it's painted with broader ideas and context than the songs off albums like Eat Me Drink Me, or High End of Low. Golden Age was an awkward middle-ground for me. I enjoyed his return with Born Villain, and and so far I've been enjoying Pale Emperor, but the lyrical content still falls a bit flat for me. Instead of sprawling poems, we get one or two interesting lines repeating there or four times for each song, which is something I noticed with Born Villain a lot, too. If you actually break down the lyrics, there's not much of them. Many songs don't even have more than one verse, it's just the same thing repeated. I just can't help feel a bit let down when I read the lyrics to something like Beautiful People or Speed of Pain, and compare it to the lyrics he's written for the last two albums; they just feel.....not as substantial. There is so much going on in the world today, it seems strange for his art to be so introspective when his older work was so concerned with society, religion, and politics on a broader scale.

Lol... so I'm late to the party here, but I just saw this video and I have to criticize the critique. 6:15 - The alleged "crutch" or relying on the context of words to convey meaning... that's the definition of language. Words without context have no meaning. "Silence the green dingo, the trapeze artists can't shit!" That sentence might mean something to someone, but without context, we'll never understand what. Context is not essential for forming a sentence or composing lyrics, but it is vital to telling a story.

You really should do The High End of Low it may possibly be his most well written album and also includes some of the most bizarre songs Manson has done and those songs may possibly be some of the better ones hes produced in his career . Songs like Into the Fire(Alt. Version)) , Four Rusted Horsemen and Devour may possibly some of his most well written song within his career. Also the vocals very diverse introducing a new howling style that is paired with a soft voice that adds a very intriguing dichotomy to the album. The connection between his vocals and the instrumentals also leave a very touching feel to the album and also makes the listeners feel the pain in his voice.

I loved the new album. I actually think it feels very smooth & sexy. To be honest, I've barely listened to anything else but The Pale Emperor...since January. That speaks for itself : ) His voice sounds amazing, lyrics are great too and the blues everyone speaks of mixes perfectly with his dark style. Overall, one of the best albums if not the best. He's changing, evolving and he rocks :) thanks

Late to the party here, but I love how you haven't dismissed TJ as a dumb neckbeard. He's so much smarter than people give him credit for. It's 2019 and he still has a significant following, which is unprecedented for someone who started as early as he did as far as I know. It's quite remarkable what he did IMO. Maybe I'm biased because he was such a huge influence on me growing up, but I think that's a testament to his longevity. He's a lot like Manson IMO. He isn't as relevant as he used to be, but still subversive enough to elicit a response from the most prolific music critic of our times. He recently mentioned you in a video in a negative light, and now I'm hooked to your videos. If that doesn't show you how influential he is, I don't know what will.

i remember MM being a god of sex in middle school, till "eat me, drink me" came out and i remember friends saying his new stuff was "pop garbage" to me, that may have been where his popularity took downward spiral and he didn't have that "it" anymore, and became old hat. i'm ok with the new stuff he puts out, they are more conscience and more level-headed, instead of his older stuff that felt wild and edgy for the purpose of being dark and edgy to Quaker Christianity groups. but now they turned their attention to bigger fish because kids at the time grew up or turned their attention to darker and edgier groups or artist.

As a child on the 90s, Manson is doing more interesting music today than the other artists I enjoyed way back when. Smashing Pumpkins and Nine Inch Nails filled out my holy trinity of great artists with Manson but I can't really get into Pumpkins or NINs new music. Billy Corgan is out in the weeds and Trent Reznor is trying to appeal to a new audience or something. Manson has aged better than most 90s musicians and although the new album is not spectacular, I would be willing to see him perform if he was touring in Ohio. I enjoyed at least half of Manson's previous album's songs going back to Golden Age but this album is more like 85%. Nothing will ever top Holywood and I can live with that but Manson is still progressing and to me still worth following.

I agree. Never been a fan of Marilyn Manson but I have to say this album sounds pretty good: it has interesting instrumentation and the atmosphere it creates goes with the topics he wants to express. However, I find the lyrics kind of redundant or flat (maybe not interesting enough) if I have to compare them with the vocals and/or melodies. I would give it a nice and cool 7.5

Being a pretty big Manson fan I gotta say I was pleasantly surprised on how much I liked this album. Now I wouldn't say it was amazing but a very solid, good album. I wouldn't put it up there with his prime works (Portrait to HolyWood) but still a good album. I went in with low expectations but I was proven wrong. I liked the heavy blues influence in most of the songs as well.

As much as I have enjoyed some of Manson's past work, ultimately the (musical) life of a provocateur is short lived. I feel like in a sense the world is passing him by. His style, his lyrics are no longer extreme. This isn't a swipe at him, it's just the natural order of things. The problem is that he has often focused too much of his efforts on being a shock rocker and not enough on the sonic style of expression. I liked the more soul searching depressive aspect of this album but there wasn't enough of that for me. I hope he really dives fully into that aspect on future releases. But if he does that he is going to have to step up his game sonically and become a bit more sophisticated in that regard.

I identify with MM in more aspects then just his music and the album's hold deeper meanings to me then they would someone who is just a fan of his older music. Manson's never been the same in any album. You have to remember that he is human, he's been through a lot of shit in the past few years and he's trying to replace the pieces of him that he lost. I love every album right down to the rarities you can only find on youtube. If I had to choose favorites though, Bird's of Hell Awaiting, Killing Strangers and Slave Only Dreams to be King are my favorites. :]

I like it - but the more Manson goes ahead on his "solo career" (from EMDM in 2007), you can totally feel how elements of the band like Gacy (a terribly underrated keyboard player which set the moods with ambiences in Holy Wood or wrote songs like "Cryptorchid" with Manson) are missing from the puzzle. A good record, very polished, even too much in certain terms of productions, sounds exactly like what Tyler Bates does solo... so it sounds a lot like a Tyler Bates soundtrack with Manson as a special vocal guest sometimes. We all may love Manson and yes, the singer was under the spotlights as public enemy number one... but at the very end, we sang his songs because good music was in it. Now, it's just ok.

The dedicated fan of an artist is always going to have a much different perspective on a piece than critics and casual listeners. It will be simultaneously more insightful and more biased in many ways, because a dedicated fan with any sort of artistic insight should definitely see a lot that goes over the heads of others, and will more than likely be willing to forgive and dismiss a lot of things that others may consider to be flaws. Just look at the Shady XV review as an example.

Love your content... but I disagree with you here. I think Manson’s roots can actually be found on the darker side of southern blues. This album was phenomenal to me because it was almost as if he was paying homage to those roots with songs that were almost entirely blues with a little bit of his industrial flare thrown in to distinguish the music as his own. Anyway, keep making amazing videos. I always love coming to see how you feel about new albums I’m interested in. Wether I agree with you or not, I always appreciate your efforts and thoughts!
