I don't know, I feel Kermode is being very politically correct here. Trust me, I'm American, American boys are obsessed with sex, mainly because of television and hip hop culture. They actually do talk like this. Does this make them vile? Possibly, but he fails to mention the sweet side to the film--these guys are not evil pigs, just naive. These guys are pretending to be hip and in our culture being hip is being a pig. And, the movie is really funny.

i think its fair to say that kermode DOES have a very bleak sense of humour and i think thats why he has over looked what most people are considering to be very funny in this and seeing it as the vile misogynist teen dialogue that he was describing and the fact that he said "call me old fashioned" doesn't actually stop it from being true. he is old fashioned and an old fart for that matter when it comes to things like this. he missed the mark with this one (pardon the pun)

Can't believe how righteously moralistic comrade Kermode is about Superbad. This film was wonderfully observed with some extremely funny set pieces. Calling the guys all porn lovin' misogynists just misses the point and only concentrates on the Jonah Hill character, not the wonderful McLovin or Michael Cera's dweeby nice guy. This was a painfully honest portrayal of what dominates the minds of all teenage boys - will they ever get served alcohol and will they ever get laid. Time to lighten up.

i first saw this movie when i was about 15, 16 or so and have watched it countless times since then and to be honest i never really noticed the vulgarity. like maybe it was slightly more than i was used to, now that i think about it but thats just the way kids are these days, thats the shit that goes through their heads, thats why theres so much love for this movie because people can relate to the characters. and if they arent in that age group then it takes them back to when they were younger. and if you look past the "bad words", you can easily pick up on an underlying narrative in superbad. it was more of a movie about the melancholy we feel when we get to that age and actually have to start making that transition from childhood to adulthood. the things we took for granted and thought would always be there, like being free of all obligations at 3pm every day, having your mother take care of almost everything for you, (and what this movie focused on) the kid who's been your best friend since childhood-- all this is now no longer going to always be there. youre at the end of grade 12 now and graduation is coming soon. and it may seem small and petty to people who havent been young for a long time but when youre young, that just feels like the end of the world. i think i felt it strongest when seth and evan have that sleepover. you know, theyre curling up in their sleeping bags looking forward to eating pizza bagels. what i saw was two 8 year olds trying to hold on to old traditions. like an old dog who still lays on the bed he slept on when he was a puppy. he still goes to it because he doesnt want to let go. the last scene really hit me hard when seth is going down the escalator with jules and hes looking back at evan. you could see it in his face that he may have been aware that this was coming all along but at that moment, he truly realizes that the kid he grew up with got accepted to a different school and that summer would be the end of their friendship. and when Curtis Mayfield sings "I guess i'll always feel the same.." im 21 now and it almost brings a tear to my eye because i remember what that felt like. unlike american pie, superbad has substance. it reminds you what being young was like and how it felt when you first realized that you wouldnt be young forever. its really a beautiful movie.

I don't really give a shit about this movie either but I'm not gonna be morally offended by a comedy movie that isn't showing anything I haven't seen or done before. And when it comes to Mark and these reviews it's strange that he gets so worked up in moral intellectual outrage, even though the movies might be more or less empty and superficial compared to potential other comedies, he is very sophisticated and nuanced in his take on other horror and the controversial "video nasty" films and the "torture porn" though not really his favourite taste, he did an introduction/analysis on the criterion collection of Salo: or The 120 Days of Sodom. Also has reviewed A Serbian Film. My personal favorite: Martyrs. And many others that go to extremes which many in mainstream audiences might mistakenly consider vile, offensive, pornographic snuff, too ultra violent etc. Of course very different in about every way to a low brow dumb comedic popcorn movie . . . I didn't expect Mark to like this but I am a bit surprised by some of his criticisms. Jonah Hill's character is one out of three, and serves the role of foil to Michael Cera's, a pretty normal (and boring) guy. I think the difference is that the vulgarity in Superbad celebrates sexism, not just in the way it's male characters relate to women, but in depicting the men/boys as creeps. Despite this, Superbad wants us to love the lads and accept what they do without judgement. It's a bleak view of people. Most of us can suspend our morality and enjoy the film because the cast are charming and it's comedy is well done, but I still think Kermode's not wrong. The key part to understanding Kermode's view is his age. One, he's got a mature experience of relationships and now has little tolerance for attitudes like those in Superbad. And two, cinematically, he's seen this story before, many times, and is frustrated that younger generations/new films haven't grown. I suspect Kermode was salved by Olivia Wilde's Booksmart. A film that was really funny without depending on gross humour.

This comment is coming late after I've been binging Kermode reviews. I find that Mark talks about movies generally with eloquence and a clearly vast film education. I very often disagree with him, but I rarely get annoyed with him, because he usually makes very astute observations. In this, however, he sounds a bit like a stereotypical, stuffy movie critic from a Shyamalan film. And I say that not even being a big fan of Superbad. Personally, I just thought it was okay. But he speaks as if anyone who liked the movie must be a knuckle dragging oaf. Yet Roger Ebert himself gave the movie 3 1/2 stars; I think Kermode perhaps just doesn't appreciate "low brow" comedy. Which is fine. But he's taking this too seriously. It's supposed to be silly, gross, and over the top - it's not trying to be The Graduate. While I didn't love this movie, I do love a couple similar films that also embrace the likeable vulgar stupidity of these comedies, such as Dumb and Dumber or Anchorman. I think these types of comedies require a different level of analysis. Is it making almost everyone laugh in the theater? Then it did its job.

@prooc Superbad is not realism. It takes certain aspects of (american) teen culture and cariacatures them. A chief problem lies in the choice of which aspects to amplify - the outdated ones that really should not be perpetuated, especially by something calling itself comedy, and with such a broad influence. Agreed, I saw this film without knowing anything about it, and it was absolutely trash and unfunny - I was actually annoyed at myself for watching it, watching a slug go across your lawn has more depth and entertainment than this film

I have to agree with Mark here just because I don't like comedies period. They aren't real movies. To me, it's like saying Weird Al Yankovic is a real singer. He's not. It's weird cuz my sister is the opposite. She will not watch a "movie" unless it is a comedy.

Kermodes idea of a wild weekend in high school was renting a black and white Venezuelan film from blockbuster and watching it alone

It's an interesting subject which also came about with Borat and certain episodes of Extras, the idea of two laugh tracks: One that gets the irony and one that doesn't and is just laughing at women or minorities or whatever. I'm on the fence personally. I agree that there is a misogynist element but I don't think it's nearly as vile or extreme as he makes it out to be. Personally I just didn't find the film that funny. The cops are hilarious but other than that it's not my thing.

I enjoy Kermode ripping on genuinely bad movies, but his taste in comedy is just bizzare, he doesnt like Superbad, he doesnt like The Big Lebowski or Burn After Reading. I've just come to accept that he and I will never agree on comedy.

@EvilRadiatedMonkey thats the problem hes speaking from his life experience with school kids, 90% of kids that are like the 3 in the film dont act like that in front of adults anyway and he cant relise that

Odd thing with this movie: I watched it in a pub with no sound (the pub almost used movies as set dressing) and enjoyed it. Watching it properly, I didn't enjoy it any less.

OMG, so disagree, people should be allowed to say anything in films to get a laugh (within reason). Why is some things ok and others isn't. Either it should all be ok or none of it should.

The fact that mark hates this movie, is evidence of how perfect it is, and why studios don’t want to make great teen comedies anymore, we instead get garbage like ‘I feel pretty’, ‘ghostbusters 2016’, ‘trainwreck’ and ‘thunder force’

No, he's a deranged male feminist. Of course, guys like this think that they're pathological worship of female timidness (over the knuckle-dragging vulgarity of males) makes them intellectually superior, so I guess "snob" works.

I think Mark Kermode really too 'cerebral' to get current comedy of this ilk. Strange because a lot of it is written by extremely clever and cerebral guys (The Weitz brothers behind American Pie were college educated, Chris Weitz even went to Cambridge). Kermodes way of thinking about comedy comes from eighties 'alternative' comedy, in which 'sexism' was one of those taboos from the comedic past that had to be done away with. He just doesn't get the ironic 'Loaded' style comedy of today.

I think a lot of the vulgarity is included to outline the inexperience and delusions of the three protagonists- Seth is quite a well crafted character, spouting vile sexual remarks to try and impress his friends and stepping on them to gain the admiration of girls. He represents the misinformed and misguided adolescent stepping across the bridge from childhood to adulthood, and at the end of the film, he realises that the things he strives for are ultimately worthless, and that he must take on a more mature mindset to enter the real world. The vulgarity of the cops is also above the crassness Mark obviously thinks their characters only amount to - they are reminded my McLovin of childlike naivety, and evidently miss the adolescent experience they are now so far from in their grown up positions of responsibility within the police force. This film definitely delves a little deeper than I think Mark suggests.

Kermode is right, men don't talk this way - in most cases, but boys do. When I was nine or so, this is how boys talked. By the time we entered highschool, the race to get your sex-life off the ground began and people were all super self-concious about it, took it "seriously" - as seriously as a kid can - and in trying to get with people, steadily ditched the vulgar language. Oddly enough, the opposite thing happened with girls; I never really ran into many girls who spoke in that way prior to highschool, but by freshman year, they made the boys sound like saints in comparison. There was no filter at all. There was a girl in my health class that remarked about how she wouldn't blow her boyfriend if he had a messy room because it made it awkward - just casually in the middle of class as a random comment to the teacher. Girls would hound guys who were virgins, mock them, calling them faggots. They would always be joking about sex in vivid detail, in ways that degraded both men and women. I really don't know how this stereotype of teenage girls being kindhearted, moral-do-gooders and earnest beings who contribute nothing to the immaturity of highschools, but are instead exclusively victims of the openly sexist and vulgar boys persists nowadays in media; it's just not how the world is at all. This always throws me for a loop when seeing movies that take place in highschool. Just recently, Spiderman Homecoming came out and people were celebrating how it authentically depicts modern highschool life in America and...it just doesn't. Maybe it's an accurate depiction of what PARENTS imagine is the life of a modern highschooler, but really the characters act like what I knew to be 3rd graders. Point is: teenagers - wether they be girls or boys - rarely fit into the ideallic nostalgia trip middleaged folk go on and that plagues fiction. Superbad is one of those rare movies that shows how teenagers really are (in this case teenagers who are immature for their age because they don't want to grow up and leave the security of their childhood behind them).

Kermode has done the right review for the wrong movie. Everything he said could easily be applied to shitty films like Roadtrip or any of the American Pie sequels, but Superbad actually had more to offer. The film did a good job of chronicling adolescent themes such as social anxiety, shyness and schoolyard status. I also didn't think that the film was particularly misogynistic; Is Kermode really trying to suggest that he never crudely discussed sex with his friends between the age of 16-18?
