Love the sound of rain! Thank you for this tutorial. I’m doing a quilt for the fair and it consists of nine 10” squares of embroidery that I have done over the last year. So all I want to do is frame around each square and around the borders.

Masking tape! Brilliant! As a straight-line quilter, that tip is revolutionary. Thank you!

It's an ongoing process. I don't think I'll ever be entirely free of it, but in this case this quilting idea was an easy choice to make.

Try checking all the paint stores for your narrow masking tape. I think I bought some at lowe's or home depot. I'm trying very hard to learn to do this. I'm 80 and believe me the brain doesn't like to learn this at all. I'm determined to make my grandson (36) a beautiful quilt using vintage fabric in the civil war time. I'm totally anal when it comes to making up patterns. I did find the civil war class with Kay England but she is way to fast for me and her quilt is very hard to do. I wasted a lot of fabric. I want to sign up for anything I can learn before I become 100. You are so talented.

Thank you Sally! I think you will definitely be able to get the hang of this. My advice is to work one block at a time and don't worry about your mistakes. I'm sure your grandson will love any quilt you make. I found the narrow strips of tape on Amazon so they're definitely out there. It's just a matter of finding them.

I know I must sound like a broken record, but I really love watching your videos. I am not new to making quilts, but I am new to quilt as you go. I live in a place where there is not many options for buying materials. Could you please help me with the kind of batting you mostly use. I only have a small domestic sewing machine, I am using a walking foot on my machine now, as I am doing my first qaug. I am going to try some of the patterns I saw on here. I am amazed at all the beautiful work I see. I also say a video of the adapter you were talking about for the low shank machine. I didn't have one with my machine, but would love to get one. Thanks for all the wonderful videos. I've learned a lot, and is still learning.

Thank you Betty! I think a thin, high quality polyester batting is a good choice. I really like all Quilter's Dream battings and Hobbs as well. I've never found a bad batting from either of those two manufacturers.

What weight thread did you use? if you did it again, would you change the thread weight or color? Personally, I prefer the painter's tape - less "sticky" - easier to manipulate.
@LeahDay

I used Isacord polyester embroidery thread which is 40 wt. Nope, I don't think I'd change it because that's my favorite thread, but it's something that definitely can change the look of your quilts depending on how thick the thread is.

I have masking tape 2 inches wide. Did you know if it's possible to put 2 rows of that masking tape and design on it and sew on the masking (painter's tape ) tape and after that , take of the tape. I know that the one that you have is more sticking than the blue or green painter masking tape.

Any suggestions for quilting a 3-D design quilt using masking tape?
@LeahDay

I would probably mark it using a light box and marking pencil. If it's complex, most likely masking tape will not do an accurate job.

I have a queen size log cabin quilt that I would like to try this method . I'm thinking one block at a time starting in the middle. I am curious though if I decide to baste with pins then use invisible thread so I can reduce the number of pins, can I go from edge to edge with the invisible thread or do I have to start from the middle?
@LeahDay
7 жыл бұрын
You should work from the middle no matter what type of thread you're using. The purpose of the pins is to hold the layers together securely so they don't shift as you quilt the lines. If you don't use enough pins or get the layers basted smooth and flat together, the layers of the quilt can shift as you quilt and create pleats and puckers on the front and back side of the quilt. I would also encourage you to try the invisible thread on a practice sandwich first. It has a plasticy texture on the surface that I've never been a fan of because it scratches my skin. I just thought I'd give you a heads up about that!

Thank you. I'll give it a try on a practice piece first.

If you put a project away for a long time with the tape ON, you risk depositing some adhesive deposits on the quilt. Ask me how I know
@LeahDay
4 жыл бұрын
Yep! I didn't mention that in this first video, but have ever since. Always make sure to take the tape off if you don't finish those lines within a day.

What do you use for backing?
@LeahDay

I use a larger piece of 100% cotton fabric. You should use nice quality fabric because I've found cheaper fabrics will tend to allow the batting to leak through which isn't nice at all!
