It's refreshing to watch a review by someone who owns his guitar and knows it inside and out because he has played it a good portion of his life. Perhaps the best guitar review I have seen by anyone, anywhere.

i actually work in the polishing department at Martin guitar. The finish is sprayed with lacker. then it gets ran on our robotic polishing machine. The polish used for that is a bar of yellow polish. there are two types of polish we call "cut" polish and "fine" polish. The cut polish is used to fix blemished parts of the guitar. The fine polish is used to take away the scratches that the "cut" polish uses. Then we use a sponge kind of thing with a polish we call "gray" polish to finish with.

My favorite guitar? A 1977 Martin D-35 that I've had since new. As for cicliste c and others like it: The internet is a great place for someone with skill and ambition (great and small) to put helpful information out to the public. Those that lack both skill and ambition can only criticize those that have achieved something. Show me you can do better, or shut up and go away.

Hey Brian, great review. I have a D-28 and i love it, and yes I have the sticky neck issue too, i find that if u take a damp paper towel or tissue(not too damp, just a couple drops of water) and u wipe the guitar neck with it, the stickiness goes away, works a charm everytime on my D-28, i think the nitrocellulose finish on the neck is a real magnet for the oils and grease on our skin. Try it and let me know :)

+Worship Tutorials I've used my D35 1975 since I bought it new. haven't wiped it off as soon as the gig was up but I have always used a Martin polish. No sticky neck. Very little finish wear. m My reso playing brother gave me a bottle of Beard Resolution instrument polish. A very very good product. You should use something! I also just purchased a 1993 D35 near mint. As you said maybe a few more years I will use it more. Not

I have a beautiful custom built Taylor with mahogany back and sides which I like and use for leading worship....but.....I'm ready to buy another nice guitar and am leaning towards a Martin D35 or Gibson j45 but the j45 also has a mahogany back and sides so will be trying out a D35 like yours since it has rosewood back and sides. Thanks for posting.

Hi, Brian! In response to your question, "What is your favorite guitar?", at this point in my life it happens to be my Martin D18. I had been playing them for about a year and came across one that sounded like an absolute gem. They all sounded good with the exception of one or two over the course of a year but this one was just amazing. I picked it up this past Friday. What I like about it is the woody/folky sound, the low oval neck with 1 3/4" nut width is perfect for me. I can play it softly or really get down on it and there's no fret buzz or farting as you called it. LOL. Flat picking is really great and finger picking is good as well. I love the vintage toner they use on the top and the mahogany on mine is gorgeous. The finish is pristine. I can't say enough about it. When I was making my final purchase decision, I was deciding between the D18, HD28V, and the D35. All are equally amazing. I just decided to go with the D18 since I had been wanting one for so long. My next purchase will likely either be a D35 or an HD28V later this year or early next year. Thanks for all of the great worship tutorials. God bless, my brother!

Nice choice! I went with a hd28v several months ago and it sounds better everyday. I've played it everyday for 3 months and I'm still in awe every once in awhile. Now that you've got the mahogany beast, maybe the next will be a 28v to mix things up a bit. That's what I plan to do, d18ge in the next year or so will be my next one!

you neck is not rosewood is it mahogany or Spanish cedar . The backs on the D35 can vary considerably too many opinions here so lets post a few facts. The D35 is a newer version of a Dred that came out in the 60's. it came about as a way to use the smaller pieces of Brazilian rosewood. The 3 pc back allowed them to use the material, In 69 Martin stopped using BRW but continued the D35 line. It does have its followers. The bracing in the d 35 uses a thinner bracing than the D28.

I like everything about the D35 except the nitrocellulose finish. I prefer polyurethane. Martins are more "Pure" sounding than Taylors. Agree about not taking guitars to guitar center for set up. I don't know if i can wield a dreadnought body guitar because it feels uncomfortable to me, i had a Guild D25, and i sold it because my strumming arm always felt that it was kicked out to far. Martin made the 3 piece back to utilize scrap rosewood. Had a D-35S(slothead) w/I.R. Sold it. Too many overtones for live miked performance. Bought a D-18S and it was a mic monster from day one. I.R. guitars sound great in the living room. Poor when miked. Mine's an '87 A-Y DY-39(450.00) w/an LR Baggs and Joe Mills mic.(250.00 installed) Cheap but killer combo. Try a Rainsong JM1000. THE guitar for the 21st century. They swapped Fishman for Baggs. Good Move. You'll sell your Martin.

What is it about the D-28 specifically that makes it so iconic? What makes it so much different from other brands? Seems to me like if two guitars have the same tonewoods, and are built with similar construction, the sound should be more or less as identical as two different guitars of the same model would be, making the brand name rather irrelevant. What am I missing?

I might add one last thing and that is that John Pearse Phosphor Bronze 12s or 13s are the most magical thing you can do to your guitar. They are just beautiful sounding strings! They have some unusual characteristics that you will love or hate... they do NOT last long and when they die they crash. Personally I love this. They sound magical and then one day they say change strings NOW! Other strings that die slowly make your guitars sound great and then gradually you guitar sounds mediocre and you don't notice how mediocre it sounds for a long time. Jon Pearse always sound great or absolutely dead! Love it! Other good news is they are inexpensive compared to all the long lasting strings. Everytime I put them on its like getting a new guitar!

D-35s are keepers! I've had my `75 nearly 40 years and wouldn't part with it. Punch it definitely has. IMO it takes a heavy pick to get the most out of it which means it requires touch when playing soft so it is not ideal for beginners but no one is a beginner forever. Jack Williams, one of the best finger pickers in the country, plays a `74. Looks a hundred years old but sounds great. To see this guitar in action search KZitem for "Jack Williams - That's All Medley - part one".

Its amazing how close it sounds to the Martin D-28, it rings like a bell. I paid $350.00 for it, used, in 2004. It sounds better today than it did when I bought it, and its now 32 years old. Believe it or not, several years ago, my pastor and very dear friend and mentor (who passed away 3 years ago) gifted me a new d-35. Martin actually published an article about it in their newsletter. You ask what's my favorite guitar? That one. Partly because it is an AMAZING guitar (I would have never bought an instrument that nice for myself), but mostly because of who it came from. I literally wouldn't sell it for a billion dollars.

I spent some time today playing guitars at Elderly Instruments. I played Martins D-18, 28, 35 & HD-28. Then I played a Larrivee D-40, and then a Taylor 410CE. Opinions: Larrivee - forget it. Weak and muddy. 410 - I liked it alot. Highs and lows, not as full as the 35. Martins - not so much on the 18. 28 was my favorite to play for whatever reason. The 35 was the best sounding to my ears by a fair margin. Just smooth, boomy, and darker than the Taylor. I would own any except the Larrivee. My choice is the 35 overall, but the Taylor was nice too.

I have a Taylor 855 12-string and a Taylor 710Koa, but my new favorite is my 1977 Alvarez-Yairi DY77 that I bought in 1979. Having been relegated to storage since purchasing my Taylor’s, I “resurrected” the Yairi, cleaned it up and took it to my local guitar guy to have minor adjustments done. Now the Alvarez-Yairi is my go-to guitar. It looks and plays like a Martin HD28.

You made a great point about the cost. They don't give Martin guitars away- and they are not cheap, especially the D'18, 28, 35, 41 or the "Cadillac" D'45. That said, 10,20, or 30 years later with proper care, your "investment" will continue to pay off- getting better and better as time goes on. Keep caring for them, and they become more valuable. My 1997 '35 is a special friend. My wife /wallet were in shock for a while, but what a magical guitar! No regrets after a few months of paychecks to help recover... Love that Johnny Cash D'35 sound! I think Martin would beg to differ on that comment lol! If it were cheaper to make it would not have a higher list price and and higher style number 35 rather than 28. Both are great guitars. The D-35 basicaly just the 28 with binding on the fingerboard and the 3 piece back and also the 1/4 braces with make it stand out from the D-28 which has the 5/16th inch. But cheaper to make? never heard that one before.

Because of increasing difficulties with the availability of genuine mahogany and the likelihood that mahogany will be further restricted by CITES, a decision was made to specify "Select Hardwood" for the neck, giving greater flexibility to production to use whatever species is currently available. Typically, the HD-35 will have mahogany or Spanish cedar for the neck. The back comes standard with indian rosewood. Brazilian would be a major upgrade price wise.

Hi - great review - what guage strings do you use? Ive got a D28 strung with medium-lites, .055 - .0125. The mediums, .056 - .013 sound better, but are harder to play and put more strain on the guitar body. I know a lot of people use lites, 054 - .012, which are easier to play, but there is a sacrifice in tone.

There's no difference in tone of the same brand of strings light or medium. The gauge dictates the volume. Higher gauge string = more volume, lighter gauge = less volume, more sustain. And you are correct, lights are easier on your fingers.

I sold a Martin HD40MS (Marty Stuart model), which was based on his Hank Williams Martin, and i kept my Larrivee D03R because it sounded nicer to me, as aleways though, it's personal preference.

To answer your question, My favorite guitar is a Yamaha A1R, and I also own a Yamaha LL6 which is a very nice acoustic also. The reason I like my A1R is it has a nice soft mellow sound that plays well in Church, and seems to have a soft sound as well. I once had a D-38 Martin and it was a good guitar also. It just seemed better suited for bluegrass music, especially when compared to my Yamaha A1R electric acoustic. I really enjoyed your video.

that's definitely not a mahogany neck. It's definitely Rosewood, and I think it is Brazilian and not East Indian!
