I met Ray Flacke and sat down and had a drink with him at a small bar in Massachusetts many years ago. I was in another band playing in the same club that day. Charming fellow, besides being a monster guitar player. I had taken some photos of him, which he incidentally needed for some promo stuff. He was a hero of mine, as we were doing some Skaggs tunes in our band at the time. Phenomenal player.

Wow... Marty and the entire band was smokin'! Larry Marrs is awesome on that Bass. Ray Flacke was a huge influence on my playing. I got to meet him and steel guitarist Bruce Bouton at Six Flags in St. Louis, MO. They were touring with Ricky Skaggs about the time 'Highway 40 Blues' was a hit for Ricky. Ray is awesome and he doesn't get the credit he deserves for starting a whole new style of Tele picking.

I had the great pleasure of seeing this iteration of Marty's band in Lebanon Pa then Columbus Ohio in either late 90 or early 91. I can confirm Larry Marrs was indeed the' King of Hillbilly Bass' and that Ray Flacke just nailed everything he played. Can't remember the drummer's name but he was off the graph and of course what can one say about that hasn't already been said about Marty? What I remember most was in Columbus they played the best cover of 'Who Will The Next Fool Be' I've ever heard and Ray and Marty soloed like angels. That show might have been the best concert I've ever seen. Finally, I can't recommend 'Untitled Island' enough for its blistering Tele virtuosity and 'Songs Without Words' for its awesome acoustic vibe.

Ray Flacke doesn't have the polish and speed of Brent Mason as well as a few other modern guys that could probably pick circles around him But there is something about his playing that makes him my #1 favorite country guitarist. He's got a lot of taste and I love how he executes his double stops. He's a bit easier to emulate then someone like Brent Mason. Although I did buy his star licks video back in the 80's and learned all his licks. I've got instructional videos from Brent Mason, Bryan Sutton, Albert Lee, Tony Rice among others and I have to say that Ray Flacke is the best teacher of all of them. He really knows how to break down his style and teach it in an understandable way.
