I was a NET Canada missionary this past year and the year before and this past year Bishop Scott McCaig spoke at NET training and I was so deeply inspired by this holy man. I am also on a journey of rediscovering the beauty of the Mass and I feel almost this polarization in my heart (tradition and charismatic) and yet Bishop Scott and Matt you answered the Holy Spirit in His perfect timing. This entire collaboration of you Matt and Bishop and the topic is straight from Christ. This has given me peace, such deep peace. Praise Our Lord!!

My parish is St. Philip de Neri in Vonda, Saskatchewan and listening to the stories shared about our patron was awesome. What I love about the current time is that we can embrace some of the beauty of Vatican II while also bringing the traditional back. I wear a veil of my own choice and receive on my tongue on my knees. I have the freedom to cling to the stability of the past while enjoying some of the newness of N.O. mass. It's truly beautiful. Charismatic protestant here. I’d love to share my experiences in investigating Catholicism and hear from some of y’all regarding some of issues that concern me. It bothers me that conversations like this seem to be the exception, not the rule, within Catholic circles. I have not converted to Catholicism primarily due to the lack of focus amongst Catholics on cultivating a personal relationship with Christ and what seems to me to be an overt neglecting of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. I’m unfamiliar with the Carismatic renewal in the Catholic Church so I can’t speak to that, but it strikes me as very disappointing that many Catholics seem to have to apologize for experiencing the emotions that come from encounters with the Holy Spirit. I understand Catholics experience the Lord through the Eucharist, but why isn’t it that more Catholics aren’t walking in the power of God and operating in the gifts? The only “on fire” Catholic on PWA I have seen was on fire for Mary, and barely spoke about Jesus. The church I go to is solely focused on ministering to the heart of Christ. Miracles are the norm at a weekly church service and I have seen more people walking in power there than anywhere else. You can’t fake the indwelling of the Spirit. Where, if at all, is there space in the Catholic Church to surrender to the Holy Spirit and making room for him to move among yall? My concern is that many aspects of Catholicism seem to place barriers between the Believer and the Lord. E.g. -The assertion that the quickest way to Christ is through his mother, and this notion of praying through Mary to Christ. -the mediators of priest between the lady and the Lord -Necessity for confession to be through a priest, as opposed to directly to Lord -The inclusion of praying to Saints for intercession We have direct access to him through his blood. The whole purpose of Christ coming here was to reconcile us to the father through his new covenant and reestablish the relationship that was in the garden of Eden. We are called to walk in the light as He’s in the Light. We can’t do this without the Holy Spirit. If Catholicism is the true faith, then why do they seem to be so many hindrances to directly accessing God? I’m asking all these with a curious and humble heart, not to stir up division. I am sincerely interested and I feel grieved in what I’ve seen amongst Catholic teachers.

I agree with Father (or let me say I believe he is speaking God’s truth) that at this point it doesn’t matter what rite (in the traditional understandings) we worship and celebrate the liturgy. God is willing to receive what we give Him however imperfect. Not to endorse unholy and abusive happenings of our day but he will receive our earnest and sincere Yes to Him. We do need to correct many things. One comment to Matt, actually it is a misunderstanding that people baptized in the Holy Spirit and “charismatic” are not traditional, reverent, and contemplative. I am spirit filled but love chant, tradition, reverence, adoration, and contemplation and the Sacred. Mary, the Mother of the Church, was a contemplative who waited on God but was also the HS fell on her and the apostles in the upper room to lead them to spread the Good News. Our world needs those who are equipped to minister and reach the people today inside and outside the church! Contemplation, tradition, and the embrace of the Trinity in fullness are needed and not mutually exclusive. 🙏 God Bless!

The church is not considered biblical because you can never find a Catholic bible study group. (thank God for BIAY) I brought a lapsed Catholic back to church but she now goes to a mega church because they approached her with bible study and she never knew anything about the bible but now she wants to know. I know you have to get people motivated to it and have lay people involved and the priest and that is difficult. I even went top a protestant church for bible study. I fell away from the church and i started dating a Lutheran and went to the Lutheran church then i met a Methodist and went to the Methodist Church. That was an ugly break up but decided i want to stay with the church so i went back to the Catholic Church but all of my bible study came form the protestants. I am committed Catholic now and staying with it.

I can relate wearing the same attire to our Marine sons' dedication to live like a Marine everywhere they go, even out of uniform. The sameness does not stifle their ability to care and be compassionate to live like Christ for others. The way they serve others - their character - remains like that of a Marine in uniform.

Monasticism is not a requirement of Christianity.

Not convinced that the new evangelization and new mass has been fruitful. The vocations and big families are at the Latin Mass but yet we are bullied into towing the line on modernism. I try to hear out priest and bishops like this but I just don't get how they think this way. And I’m not at all trying to speak bad about or attach ill intentions to Novus Ordo Catholics. Please be charitable in replies, God love you!

The New Evangelization and the New Mass has done greatness in Africa and Asia... the main issue is rooted in culture and the decaying of Orthodoxy in the culture of the world. The institutions of the world are based on individualism and seeking an individual material utopia. These are the key problems...

This probably isn't as clear cut as you might think. I suspect almost any TLM parish is outperforming any but the most exceptional of NO parishes... but when one considers just how many NO parishes there are one suspects there are a surprising amount of exceptional NO parishes. In absolute terms, I suspect the vast majority of vocations and large families exist within NO communities because that's also where the vast majority of Catholics are. I say suspect a lot because there's no data on this as far as I know; but I think these are informed guesses. It's also not clear to me how much you can separate the fruits new evangelization (and likely the new mass) from the fruits of TLM. Every, single TLM Catholic I know comes from a NO parish. Maybe that's sampling bias, but I suspect that the vast majority of TLM Catholics haven't always existed within a TLM context. If that's the case, than the best you could say (for now) is that TLM parishes are harvesting the seeds that the new evangelization has sewn. That may change in the future, but for now the reality is that the faith TLM has given was almost certainly created in the context of a NO environment. Were the NO Catholics who joined TLM parishes faithless to begin with, or are most are many of them already solid Catholics looking to love and serve God better? If the the latter is the case, and I think it is, then weren't those traits the fruit of the new evangelization?

@bv4n You do realise that the Twelve Apostles were a small movement, right?

@@Traspyche One of the greatest missionaries in modern Africa was Marcel Lefebvre. The traditional Mass did the early evangelisation in the French parts of Africa and the new Mass picked up once Christianity had already been spreading for a while.

I find it’s very difficult to explain movements of the Holy Spirit to Catholics. The church has squashed the supernatural so much. Sure, we had the Eucharistic presence of Christ…but since the church has OK’d GMO Eucharist, well, you figure it out.
