Phoenix fire crews responded to reports of a fire located inside a recycling facility near 39th Avenue and Lincoln Street around 12:30 pm Saturday afternoon. Upon arrival crews discovered flames coming from an area on the property where bundles of cardboard and paper were being stored. 20+ mph wind gusts caused the blaze to quickly spread to a neighboring commercial structure. Fire crews on scene balanced the assignment to a first alarm and began defensive operations as the fire consumed the recycling yard. The fast moving flames quickly spread throughout multiple commercial properties along Lincoln Street triggering a 6th alarm assignment. Fire crews from all over the city of Phoenix as well as 10 different Departments across the County responded to assist. A massive plume of dense black smoke could be seen from miles around as the flames intensified. Multiple small brush fires were caused by burning debris which was carried east of the scene by the heavy winds. By the late afternoon the fire was nearly a half mile wide causing officials to balance the assignment once more, this time to a type 1 assignment typically only seen during wildland fire operations. 200+ firefighters battled the intense inferno throughout the day and late into the night. At least one firefighter was transported to a local hospital for non life threatening injuries to his lower extremities. Fire crews remain on scene working to extinguishing the flames as of early Sunday morning. Investigators are currently working to determine the exact cause of the fire.
