bummer you couldn't get into it, one of the defining songs of the 90s IMO. It's a mood, the 90s was all about moodiness and gritty environments, this song takes me back there.

For me, this is still one of the best songs ever and a defining track for the early 90s. The hairs on the back of my neck still stand up whenever I hear it. I’d really suggest listening again and trying to understand the vibe.

My favorite song by Massive Attack was "Protection" which was a collaboration between MA and Tracey Thorn (from Everything but the Girl). Thorn's vocals are sublime and drives the sultry smooth groove. The video is quite interesting as well. Thanks, Angela.

“Protection” is a more accessible song and would’ve been a better fit for Angela, who seems completely unaware of the trip hop genre. In fairness, she was really young at the time. ✌🏽

Thanks, Nick Sneddon, for the request. Massive Attack is really a departure for the Dayone Reacts channel (and I’m sure its subs as well). I loved trip hop and 90’s UK music (Sneaker Pimps, Tricky, Morcheeba, Portishead, Hooverphonic, etc) in general. I could see Angela’s struggle to relate to it bc she doesn’t often react, if at all, to this genre (she thought the inclusion of hip hop was “an idea”). ✌🏽🇬🇧

Its a bloody masterpiece. It might be that the genre of music, trip hop, is meant to be ethereal. The song itself in my opinion is perfect, signifying discovering love and losing love. Its not meant to be a crescendo but rather something that ebbs and flows. Like love itself.

Hi Angela, sad news but Tony Bennett one of the greatest song stylists ever passed away at age 96. As one of the great interpreters of the American Songbook, he influenced many other artists who he collaborated with. Best known for his hit, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, but as beautiful are Yesterday I Heard the Rain or The Shadow of Your Smile (box of tissues recommended) and The Good Life and Cold, Cold Heart. It would be a nice tribute to a great artist.

This style of music was kind of Acid house if I'm not mistaken. It's been a while since I listened to this genre. It reminds me of Moby back in the late 90s. His style was very similar but I liked his melodies. Not too familiar with Massive Attack except for this song which to me is just ok. It doesn't really grab you. Without the lady's voice, I don't even think it would be worth a listen. To each its own though.
@muzikkification
Жыл бұрын
Well acid house is more upbeat - I'm not too well versed with the genre but I believe it was more of a Chicago/Detroit scene thing, whereas Moby and techno is generally less party and more downtempo. This though, really fits under the Trip Hop umbrella, which is essentially a mix of electronic, hip hop, soul and rock. Portishead, Tricky and early Post-era Bjork are other good examples of trip hop. Definitely see the similarities though - the use of samples, etc. It's also known as the Bristol Sound, as most trip hop artists originated from there.

Although the video is iconic and lots of people have copied or parodied it... I don't think it quite works with the song. You're expecting something to happen and nothing does, it's a great song to close your eyes to and lose yourself in and the visuals detract from it.
