APPRECIATE THIS ONE SEAN!!! I was just going through all my songs for a new project I've always used the WLM, the only issue was the consistency for each song, my levels defiantly would hit -14, but I found myself adjusting levels to each song when the mix was actually pretty good. Thanks!!! CLUTCH!!!! I will be using this technique!

Using meters to match loudness makes sense, but how does this technique adjust for "perceived loudness"?
@SeanDivine
Жыл бұрын
Technically, LUFS is intended to measure perceived loudness (not just loudness like Peak or an average like RMS). That being said, it doesn't account for everything. This video has some more in-depth methods - kzitem.info/news/bejne/sax_ypqhioiBpaw
@mikeweber5362

@@SeanDivine Thanks for the response! I use LUFS to volume match songs. However, when one song ends loudly and the next song starts softly, it makes the listener want to jack up the volume because the next song is "perceived" to be lower in volume.

Good stuff as always Sean! Just curious if you had that link that you talk about at 2:09 (unless I missed it on mobile)? Would love to read that.
@@SeanDivine I went back and rewatched that video (saw that I already liked it) with a renewed mindset and everything you said made sense and serves as a great strategy. Mastering quieter never really bothered me until recently. I remember being frustrated that my wife didn’t already have Soundcheck enabled (which apparently isn’t enabled by default like it is for Spotify) so my -14lufs masters I delivered sounded “lost” in the sea of commercial releases. I was operating under the mindset that compression would come standard in cars one day like the modern day “bass and treble” settings so I might as well gain some punch by mastering lower if I get on radio (which obviously every station sounds different and uses completely different compression settings). But now that I also realize I like the sound of some compression on the master (as long as it isn’t overboard) I’m game to play! Did y’all know about the Loudness Penalty plug-in? It shows you and plays back in real time how your song will sound on each streaming platform and reads out how much it will raise and lower each track. KZitem doesn’t raise a track in volume if it’s less than -13 LU and Tidal doesn’t raise either. Spotify uses a limiter which could slightly alter tracks under 14 (or whatever they will change to)

Just a question if you can answer, many streaming platforms say to shoot for a -2 True Peak if the songs LUFS goes past -14, So, I just wanna ask, since I notice you're only setting the true peak to -0.1 if it doesn't actually affect the song when being played back on these platforms?
@SeanDivine
3 жыл бұрын
it depends on the platform... it's a safer bet to have at least 1dB True Peak of headroom to factor in the conversion to lossy formats. That said, as far as the major platforms (Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal), I've never noticed any unexpected results going over. What you hear in the lossy formats is generally what you get (with normalization turned off)

might be a silly question, will this work fine with songs you've received from another engineer? Songs that have been mixed down and bounced out already and would putting it through LUFS editing/ mastering affect the quality?

its confusing for me when i run thru a spotify playlist_or even an artist' same album or discography the levels are all over the place_some extremely high or low_are they not referencing their tracks against other tracks in the genre at all? i'll admit some songs that are too low & muddy_i skip right away_& some that are too loud @ noisy_skip_so if my work was being skipped for this_terrifies me sooo id take a playlist of techno tracks where i love the dynamic rumble & clarity balance_match my tracks to their LUFS levels_& voila that's it? ready to demo?

Yo Sean. Quick question. I actually use your Studio Rack Mastering presets on my tracks “Garage to Grammy.” Can I place Ozone on my master track after the SR preset and aim for -11 LUFS as well? Also should I place Ozone on pre or post on the master?
@SeanDivine

Hi E, Mastering Chains SR includes limiting / maximizing, so you would want to place any Ozone processing BEFORE StudioRack and also be mindful of signal flow for best results in terms of the dynamics.

Hey Sean. What do you like to use for your True Peak? I noticed you had it maxed at like -0.1. But for streaming service they suggest -1 (or lower with louder music) to allow enough headroom for down conversations without clipping. Downgrading music can add amplify the peeks. Any recommendations?
@SeanDivine

The safest bet is to go -1 TP. That said, I’ve delivered my own songs closer to 0 without any noticeable difference... it really comes down to the dynamics of the track and the quality of the master
