Two of the Redtails pilots that got capture Lt. Alexander Jefferson and Lt. Richard D. Macon (that end up in the barracks with Buck) were famous. Jefferson after the war wrote a book, Red Tail Captured, Red Tail Free: Memoirs of a Tuskegee Airman and POW, is a personal memoir of those who served America in World War II and after. Macon and Jefferson helped found Tuskegee Airmen Inc. and each served as president of the Detroit chapter. And if you want to know more about the Red Tais (Tuskegee Airmen) there are 2 movies at least that tell the story about it, one is "Tuskegee Airmen" with Laurence Fishburne and Cuba Gooding Jr, and the other is "Red Tails" also with Cuba Gooding Jr. Keep up the good work.

If you're wondering it wasn't just sleep deprivation that caused crosby to collapse the way he did. He was taking uppers, which were pretty common with pilots and other personnel in those kinds of situations at the time. But as the germans found out early on in the war when they distributed similar meds to their own soldiers. it'll keep a person going for days and then they'll pretty much collapse and be completely useless and unable to do anything for few days after they wear off. Hence alot of german officers being very against their use as they tended to cause more issues than they solved. Same thing happened to him which is why he was out of it for three days Also the interrogator wasn't in the SS, he was a luftwaffe officer. POWs were assigned interrogators and POW camps based on their own service branch

The Nazi Military were issued tablets of what we know know as Meth Amphetamine. Why these soldiers kept fighting -didn't stop. Yet, especially during the Russian invasion, when the supply lines were cut, like in Stalingrad - much of the German soldiers went through withdraw, or madness, and brutal exhaustion during brutal Winter weather.

I think we don't see much of D-Day in this show is that it was a non event for the bomber pilots. There was no Luftwaffe, no heavy flak, and no need to fly deep into enemy territory. As Rosenthal said to Crosby the missions went smoothly and with little resistance. For the soldiers on the beaches and the paratroopers dropping in it was hell - the "Day of Days". For the 8th Air Force the missions deep into Germany were their "Omaha Beach" from Saving Private Ryan.

I remember driving up to a friends on the outskirts of the metropolitan area on Easter Thursday where a large group of us were going to play games. I stayed awake until Monday night, however Monday afternoon my functionality had dropped significantly. We were playing 500 and I reneged two hands in a row. Then I drove other people home which was a massive mistake, we all made it safely, but was luck not anything else because I was deprived enough I was starting to get acid wash occurring while driving. Every other similar time afterwards I got at least four hours sleep overnight, because I'd learnt a lesson. If that sounds like a comparison it isn't, the entire time that easter was like light play time whereas Crosby's would have been hard mental work.

When it came to the fighter pilots and bomber pilots, and their relationships? The bomber pilots referred to them as their "Little Friends", and very often fighter pilots were upset and angry that the earlier models of fighters available at the start of the war, didn't have the fuel capacity and range to escort them very far. But, once the P-51 Mustang was introduced, they were often able to escort the bombers to their target and back. Bomber pilots have nothing but the most fond respect for the guys covering their six, regardless of their skin color. And while it wasn't true, the Tuskegee airmen and their unit were rumored to have never lost a bomber that they escorted. I think no one ever corrected the rumor because that's good for morale. They were also called the Red Tails, because the tails of their fighters were painted red. The 332d is still an active Air Force unit, flying A-10's, as the 332d Expeditionary Operations Group, out of Kuwait.

JACQUI, I just watched a 6 part mini-series on HBO Max called "The Plot Against America"! One of the main actors is the actor who is playing Crosby in this series!! The plot against America is a fictitious tale of what America would have been like had we not entered World War II. It proposes that Charles Lindbergh won the 1940 election against Franklin Roosevelt on a platform of anti-war and anti-semitism!! I found it to be a very interesting six-part series which can be said to parallel some of the Dynamics of today's political atmosphere!!! I don't think I've seen anyone react to it and it would be a curious thing to see how you would react to it!!

Episode 8 is a sign of apparent rush from the production, the story perhaps already exhausted. Introducing the Red Tails this late is so undeserving, featuring them is a crime. Remove them and the episode will run just the same, because there is nothing much to be told by then. The Red Tails deserve better. And perhaps more proper if the show is ABOUT them rather than the bomber group considering how the plot seems to go downhill with each episode.

Personally, I thought this episode tokenized the Tuskegee Airmen. Which is a shame, because they are arguably the most iconic group of WWII fighter pilots. While Jefferson and Macon were imprisoned in Stalag-Luft 3, they never interacted with members from the 100th. Remember, that Stalag held over 11k POWs. The whole thing just felt like a last ditch effort to give Cleven some character development. There were much better ways for this episode to be written and structured. Especially, since that Tuskegee mission was part of Operation Dragoon. Which was the Invasion of Provence, and was a sister offensive to the Invasion of Normandy. Originally both invasions were meant to occur simultaneously. Using the Tuskegee Airmen to showcase the less famous invasion that led to the Liberation of France, could have been really interesting. Especially since the woman-Sandra-is-based-on is who told Crosby about what happened to France’s Jews, which is why he assumed she was a spy. While Rosie was shot down over Nuremberg, and crash landed in American-occupied France in September 1944.

The Liberator is a mediocre to good series, with an unusual visual style. I was baffled it ended with only 4 episodes. If the goal is to follow the exploits of a specific unit throughout the war, I expected a lot more, maybe 10 parts like Band of Brothers or The Pacific. I understand your point quite well, and I even agree somewhat. But the reason it’s that way was because of the racial hatred during WWII, the set of challenges those men had to face were unimaginable, and These men for years after the war never received the recognition they deserved until much later, one of the officers comments during the episode explains it quite well “I’m looking at men in here who should be Captains or even Majors by now, but we both know why that won’t happen.” IMHO There isn’t nearly enough shows or movies out there that truly do the Redtails justice

@@tirasbell4740 - Segregating the Black and Japanese-Americans in the military was wrong, but every other minority served in the “white” units. Hispanics, Jews, Chinese, Koreans, and Native Americans all served in what were known an integrated units. The only reason the Tuskegee Airmen were shoehorned into “Masters of the Air, was because “Band of Brothers” erased that it was a Japanese unit that liberated the “labor” camp in Ep.9. “Masters of the Air” tokenized the Tuskegee Airmen and used them to give Austin Butler’s character some eleventh-hour development. Which honestly was more racist than ignoring the Tuskegee all together. Diversity for the sake of diversity only hurts minorities, as seen in this episode. The director claimed she was trying to portray that only by integrating the military could the USA win the war. Except her argument falls flat, by having the Tuskegee Airmen interact with the imprisoned members of the 100th. The superior portrayal would have been contrasting the Tuskegee Airmen’s experience with Rosie Rosenthal’s. Since, he is Jewish and also a minority but is leading the 100th. Which says a lot, considering who the Allies were fighting in the European theater.
