Great to hear the perspective of another teacher. I totally agree that teaching is all consuming. It's really hard to have the head space to think of any sort of side hustle. After 14 years of teaching I decided a couple of years ago that there must be a more efficient way of earning a living so I retired to do other things! The pay is certainly not reflective of the skill and effort that teachers put in.

Thank you for sharing, Dafydd. What did you teach?

@@TheHumblePenny I taught mathematics 😉. I was championing financial literacy and compound interest, telling kids to buy assets instead of liabilities. Now I do it on a different platform. I'm looking back to going back to my old school to do a session on personal finance for the 6th form. Who knows, if it's successful, I could roll it out to other schools.

Really interesting. I've been (and still am) a teacher for 30 years - the best comparison is to think of the job as like working on the oil rigs. Term time is like being on the oil rigs - all hands to the pumps and very little time to do anything else. School holidays are like being off the rigs - but you are really tired and need the recovery time. Having said all that, over the years when money was tight I did on-line tutoring and exam marking as side hustles.

I absolutely loved Maths as a high school student. I even considered studying it for a first degree. I tried tutoring as an undergrad and quickly realised that it's one thing to understand a topic, it's something totally different to be able to teach it. Kudos to you, Lexi, and all the patient teachers out there!

Teaching is by turns a rewarding, challenging and exhausting profession. Having worked in advertising and media, I taught secondary English for 18 years. With hindsight the most 'useful' thing I will probably ever do; so many extraordinary students and memories. Around ten years in the mental health pressures became a serious issue and eventually I reduced my hours gradually and moved over to my other passion, researching and dealing in antiques. Now teach a day or two a week in my old school covering for colleagues, which helps cover basic bills whilst growing the business. Love what I do and glad I gave teaching everything for a good few years. Lexi, you are so positive and your students are lucky to have you.

This is a fantastic Episode!! As I am a recently qualified Science Teacher “ECT” in the UK, I do enjoy the career so far 😅 however it can be very challenging with behaviour, Work-Life balance, MARKING!!! 😓 and more etc. Although, I do believe that there are many ways that teachers can use their invaluable skills to build businesses and passive income in their spare time. At the end of the day any route outside of your comfort zone is going to take discipline and commitment to achieve financial independence.

My wife was a teacher for 15 years of hard work with little financial rewards as an incentive, however, it gave her the personal satisfaction that has enriched her, today she is working with city insurance with excellent pay package but without personal satisfaction of teaching. Thanks for sharing!

WOW, that's so interesting. I had that lack of personal satisfaction to some extent with my work in the City. And I wasn't alone.

Could you do an interview with creative freelancers? I.e actors, directors, screenwriters? These are occupations are seen as ‘cash for time’, I’m interested to see if there are any side hustles creatives can use? Thank you so much! 🧡
