The reproductive cycle of the monarch species involves four generations over the calendar year. This video covers the monarchs that breed in New England during the summer and produce the next generation that migrates. Upon reaching their destination in mountainous Mexico they congregate in the millions. Here they have cool temperatures, moisture and adequate shelter to survive the winter. This wintering population is the final generation that begins anew every year. In February and March they become reproductive again starting a new cycle as they move north through the southern United States. Along the way monarchs can live as long as nine months producing a second and third generation. It is usually the fourth generation that arrives back in New England throughout May.
Monarchs, like so many other species, are on the decline. Habitat loss and climate change are some of the reasons. But there is hope. WWF has been involved for many years in reforestation efforts and ecotourism.
