I decided to produce this slideshow for my viewers for two reasons. First, I wanted to show you Ukraine in a different light. For the past six months we all have seen the physical destruction and human suffering on the nightly news. Ukraine was and still is a beautiful, culturally diverse and resource-rich country. In these 275 still images I have tried to sample the essence of what is Ukraine in peacetime.
My second reason is somewhat more personal. As an East Prussian my birthplace, Insterburg, is only 550 miles from Kyiv. As such culturally there is a great deal of overlap and similarity, however vague that may be. Throughout the region including the Baltic States and Belarus all practice
many aspects of an agrarian society. I call it a pork-potato-cabbage culture. And the invasion of East Prussia (now Kaliningrad Oblast) by Russia has brought home many memories of the end of WWII in 1945. Over two million German refugees were forced to leave their homes during a brutal winter.
So in short, I felt compelled to respond in my own way, with images, of what is being lost. If the current rate of aggression is not stopped the entire independent nation will be destroyed and/or annexed by Russia.
