Great to see Sikastan’s leaders looking into aerobic sports. I would love to see a review of a road cyclists program, especially your advice would be for athletes looking working strength and power for events that last for multiple hours but also requiring high power out of short bursts repeated throughout.

I was having a look but the pros seem to play things close to there chest on KZitem. I also don’t have insta to see if there are any on there. I know team Movistar have a presence on there, maybe content to be mined? I have been on a body recomp this year trying to maintain power and loose weight and get down to 80kg (from 95kg this time last year). Currently at 87kg but it has been hard to work out how to train strength in light of the obvious losses I am going to have with that movement. Even if you guys could speak to strength training in a (natty) recomp that would be great. Should I just get ‘hot’ and let the gear work it’s magic?

@@sikastrength Nils van der Poel has his entire training schedule up as pdf. He prioritised aerobic conditioning for anaerobic sprints.
@Second247

@@Dorsiazwart Nils van der Poel is speed skater, very different sport, closer to rowing than cycling. Guy did insane hours on bike, true. But your not wrong. It's all about aerobic power, which then gives rise to anaerobic power and more importantly gives repeatibility of anaerobic power. Anaerobic endurance is one of the shittiest trainable attributes, it peaks soon and doesn't contribute to anything else around it. It like entitled spouse, takes alot and doesn't give much anything in return. Something like Paris-Roubaix takes hours and hours and hours and there has to be ability to attack-attack-attack thru out the course, Stephen Seiler (hugely known name in endurace world) did an analysis of one of the Paris-Roubaix and there was like 30-50 anaerobic efforts spread thru out the whole event by the winner. Which is just insane. And his take is that you don't train anaerobic zones much at all. It all comes from how high is your aerobic threshold, FTP (power you can hold for an hour) and vo2max, with those enough high you can keep attacking time after time again. Without superb aerobic base you will be spent after couple. I willing someone can train 1-2 minute efforts very close to race to improve anaerobic endurance, but this particular attribute peaks quickly. Even after few sessions. So aerobic base is the most important thing. Sprinting is totally different case for road cyclists. And when i talk of sprinting i'm focusing mainly on 5second maximal power (which most training softwares track). Ability to respond to attacks and accelerate after corner is vital outside time trials. Reason being that cycling is drafting sport (for those who don't understand the sport). If you get dropped after corner, or guy in front of you attacks, you have to get back into draft to conserve energy, ideally you can't be dropped from draft at any point as you can respond to any acceleration with similar effort. Time trialists, who generally are not explosive are in trouble in criteriums, they get dropped after each corner and in each attack because they just can't accelerate like their opponents. So in sense high maximal power and high aerorbic endurance makes sure that you can respond fast to attacks and keep doing so thru out the race. This is how (road) sprinters who generally aren't as good aerobically as other road cyclists usually win races. You can't drop them, but have to plough thru the air while sprinter sits behind you in airpocket left by you doing considerably less work. And at finish line you just can't match their sprint. But make no error, road sprinter is still has to have a huge aerobic machinery, without it he can't keep on responding to attacks. And at times they have to ride hard sustained efforts as well. I do follow quite a few pro road cyclists and (road) sprinters in particular and they are not strong. Many do squat but weight seem always to be pathetic (i have a theory: they preserve their type IIx fibers by not lifting heavy). I know one KZitemr who is pretty good Criterium racer Jaspers Verkuijl was part of pro team and, i think, held national title in criterium racing. Guy weights 80kg and did front squats 4x4 with 120kg and deadlifts with 185 4x4. He has one good example of videoed crit race, where you had to repeat near maximal sprint (for him 1500-1700 watts) each lap thru out the race to stay close to lead.

4:00 infact there are coaches on VERY succesful track teams winning gold medals who don't think you need rapid force development from gym work, track cycling is closer to powerlifting than weightlifting in this regards. You just need a high force output from gym, rapid stuff is dealt in track. There are quite elaborate reasons for that, one being that cycling is not like the other sports. A meme, yes. But it's true: Cyclist can choose the cadence, unlike in running or literally any other sport (in powerlifting grindiness of the lift is actually quire similar). And cadence has effect on how one's neuromuscular system operates, what sort of fibers it utilizes and so fort. High levels track sprinter might actually have quite high amount of Type I fibers. It sounds quite far fetched and i'm not easily to believe it, but this is the Dutch team we are talking about so one can't have something so vital wrong and get such success as they do. Now should you still squat fast? Yes. But track is there for an actual speed work.
@dominicaubrey4588

Very interesting and I often considered this. I read the leg speed at higher cadences can’t be replicated in the gym anyway, it’s too fast, and the gym stuff is a lot to do with getting the big gear moving from low cadence/high torque.

I would love to see you guys break down sumo training. There honestly isn't a ton of footage of sumo weight training regimen (here's one) kzitem.info/news/bejne/2ZeK0J-OmKh5lY4 but it seems like the vast majority of their training is extremely high volume bodyweight exercises (many of which are considered ritualistic and not just for sport). Could be really interesting.

On the topic of clean pulls, the upright back is also required to allow explosivity on the top part of the lift. This last part is training the setup for the clean, a very important exercise to increase both the rate of force development and the quick release of muscular tension needed when pedalling at high cadence with maximal power production

Would really like to see a similar video on rowers, as it is a power endurance sport. Relatively high power per stroke and relatively low cadence as compared to something like cycling, yet still primarily using the aerobic energy system. Also generally quite tall people with poor squatting leverages.
