The only known recording of a masterclass given by Duruflé, on a composition central to the organist’s repertoire. Filled with musical insights, technical suggestions, and even some humor . . .
The cassette tape from which this material comes is obviously incomplete; it is missing some of the beginning, and perhaps a performance by M. Duruflé at the end. All the same, it is a precious document, both for the musical ideas Duruflé has to share with us, and for how hearing his voice can give us a glimpse of the characteristic precision and energy of his mind.
Poignant, also, is hearing the voice of Marie-Madeleine Duruflé-Chevalier, his wife, now widely regarded as one of the greatest of organists-though at the time of this event, not at all well known.
This masterclass was part of an Organ Symposium held at Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in September of 1969. This was a stop on the Duruflé’s fourth tour of North America. (See my channel page for videos of performances by Maurice Duruflé at their recital the day before the masterclass.)
I have done what I can to provide translations for the viewer. My French is not perfect, and the voices collide and overlap, and some of them speak rather quietly, rapidly, or both. Luckily, M. Duruflé’s voice generally comes through very clearly. I encourage those with sharper ears than mine to add their translations in the comment section.
