According to his autobiography, And Now...Here's Max (1967), he was appalled to find among his assignments the task of hosting a cowboy music show called After Breakfast Breakdown. To protect his anonymity, and in hopes of quick reassignment, he improvised the character of "Old Rawhide", assuming the voice of an elderly ranch hand and giving colorfully disdainful appraisals of the songs he introduced.
Max Ferguson was truly a unique character for staid old Canada. He was a man with eclectic musical tastes and knowledgeable on the subject. In his early career on CBC he may have had to introduce “country and western music” ... of which he was not the greatest fan ... but he did it with style( as exemplified in his choice of intro music) and his humor ... that made his shows popular across the nation. The theme song he picked for his old Rawhide show was a bit of an enigma because it never lasted for much more than 15-20 seconds and no credits were ever mentioned. It was obviously good because Ferguson’s audience would continually request that he play it in its entirety ... which he actually did, once. I’ve been looking for this particular piece of music for at least the last fifty years by ... Les Paul .
The reason I could never find it was, as I learned a few years ago, it was recorded by the American jazz guitarist, George Barnes ... who was as unique in his abilities on the guitar as Max Ferguson was to Canadian radio. The title of the instrumental played with such great style is “The Clarinet Polka”. Not easy to play on a clarinet and even tougher on the guitar. George Barnes does it with no apparent effort ... because he was an accomplished musician who could read and arrange music as well
