Karl Straube, Max Reger's best friend and ultimate performer, did something strange when publishing his friend's works: he halved all the metronome markings. Many since, have accused Straube, although one of Europe's leading organists at the time, of not having understood Reger's music. But is that right? Reger approved Straubes editions and many Straube concerts were followed by letters of gratitude by Reger.
And if you are already scratching your head, continue doing so: the newly restored Welte-Mignon-Philharmonic organ, originally built for the Titanic's sister ship, the Britannic, still has the original paper rolls on which Reger played some of his own music. And here the "mystery" only gets bigger: The composer himself plays his own music half at the indicated speed. If not slower.
Marcel Punt, who wrote under the pseudonym of Henrico Stewen for a while, solved the issue in his doctoral thesis. His take on the matters in this (first) online interview !
