Hey John I've been struggling for months with pain just under the knee cap when performing back squats. Any idea on how to solve this? (When I'm doing front squats the pain decreases but still hurts bad when lifting heavy)

What he said ^^ for guys with limited mobility like John. Not everyone can deep squat with heels down, and many avoid it simply because of outdated information about the harm of squatting “on your toes”. In reality it is not a bad thing to squat like this if you know what you’re doing.

Sorry no hating but I don’t get it : why maxing out a deep squat (not very specific and risky for Isaiah’s back and hips) so close to the major event of the year where you want him to peak (dunk camp trying to beat the 50,5 inch record)?

Functional overreach mate- We are 7 day out, most research indicates 10 is perfect for a proper taper, but since we have been heavily unloaded in the weight room the last month, his ONLY goal was attempt to maintain as much of his Power clean and Back squat strength. The volume is so minimal it likely will have no effect. That said, his back is fine BECAUSE the volume is SO low. And then the hip doesn't bother him on deep back squats for some reason, just clean catches and front squat; but we also had a conversation and he WANTED to push the intensity up in a back squat even though I suggested 3x3. So yeah, there's the full story lol.

You'd have to ask him lol. My best bet is that the Oly shoes aren't quite enough of an elevation, so the plates let him get in a more comfortable position for his hip and low back.
