It was the first Monday in May 1983 when Massachusetts decided to change tolling on the Tobin Bridge and Callahan Tunnel. The idea was traffic would move faster since drivers only had to stop to pay the toll in one direction. The experiment lasted for 33 years, until MassDOT introduced open-road tolling in 2016, and switch tolls back to each direction.
