In this video, we go over some modelling techniques and tips in Maya. Such as Edge hardness, or how smooth or solid an object appears. Edge flow and topology, or the way in which the mesh of the geometry is laid out and flows throughout the mesh. And finally Sub-Division Modelling, or mesh smoothing. Hopefully these tips can help you a little with your workflow in Maya, and help you to understand a few fundamentals.
Part1: Edge Hardness
• Edge hardness and edge bevelling to make objects look more real.
• No object in real life has a perfectly hard edge, even if it is a very hard or sharp material.
Part2: Edge flow and topology tips
• Importance of good edge flow, and how it affects your models.
• Give examples.
• How to terminate unnecessary edges. How this works on a flat surface vs a curved surface, and how it can cause deformation when being smoothed.
Part3: Mesh smoothing/Sub-Division Modelling
• What is Sub-Division Modelling, and why do we do it.
• Benefits. Keep your mesh low and easier to work with
• Keep your mesh as low res as possible, for as long as possible, because it is easier to get the shape correct. It will be much harder to change the shape and keep a surface smooth if you have a lot of sub-divisions.
