I love how u said that now half your mall is just boutiques. That's so funny you say that, like my mall already felt so gentrified, and now the same thing is there for me too, there's so many 'boutiques'. I get my nails done at this nail place at the mall I go to, and this lady next to me was trying to sell me stuff from her boutique at the same mall and I was just like trying to be nice like oh my gosh those are so cute but in my head I was like lady shut the f up you think I have $40 to drop on a little fake necklace 😭😭I used to love Francesca's too

As a Caribbean brown person, why does it matter that it got "gentrified" and what's the issue with boutiques?? My country has malls with "boutiques" too. Some stores with a cultural background (Caribbean, Indian, Chinese, Arab mainly and it's mainly the food) but mostly your not so blatantly cultural stores. I don't know how to phrase this. I'll add that if the "non-gentrified" mall was profitable, it wouldn't have gotten "gentrified." You guys are weird over there.
@GwendolynnBY

I think what they mean on both points is that it's too expensive now. Just a bunch of little stores selling low quality items for high prices. They're probably barely profitable right now, too, and will likely die out if things don't change at their mall.
@peachy_lili

@@imacarguy4065 the ones you mentioned actually charge fair prices because they come from a background of understanding the value of money... as a white person, cough cough, our homegrown boutiques are often gonna be jacked up in cost and low in value. the "nongentrified mall" was made up of corporate stores, hon. those stores and brands are all collapsing now because Capitalism did what it did and they drove down value in favor of profit.

My sister worked at francescas for years. A couple of big things: Their computer/inventory management systems are notoriously bad. Very out of date, constantly getting things wrong. Additionally, they’ve been scrambling recently, closing stores and looking to close more in the near future because profits from individual stores are very hot and cold. In general, I’d say they are headed in a similar direction as larger chain stores like J.C. Penny. Wouldn’t be surprised if bankruptcy was around the corner for them.

Over the course of a decade freelancing I saw the norm change, it went from 30 days to 90 days being the most common terms clients would pay on, so by the time you figure out you should cut someone off you could have 6 months unpaid labour sunk in them. I don't know what that looks like with physical stuff; I worked with a small group of graphic designers, photographers, etc; small "m" media creatives. But it's hard to know what to do sometimes, bc you get whole chains of professionals waiting on some corporate client to sign a freaking paper so you all get paid, & the norm was already stretching to 120 days past invoice when I left the industry.
