The Moody Blues rival everyone at times. WHEN you're a part of something incredible, I'm certain it gets surreal! LOL. It must be some kind of epic-permanence barrier being broken and most of EARTH takes notice. Consider this: Shakespeare wrote 'Romeo & Juliette' in *_1597!_* PEOPLE STILL: reference, randomly talk about AND still have that play done TODAY! That's f-ing +400 YEARS STILL and counting.🤯🤷🏻♂️

It is clear that what Brian Wilson was going for with Pet Sounds was very heavily influenced by Phil Spector, which should not be forgotten (despite him going off the rails later). Listen to “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” by The Righteous Brothers (which came out in 1964), and you basically hear the blueprint for the production on Pet Sounds.

If you listen to The Beach Boys in 62' and listen to the Beatles in 62' you can hear which band 'borrowed' from the other. In terms of song structure, harmonies, and focusing on writing songs specifically for the LP format? the Beach Boys were the templet for the Beatles who had a wealth of talent with three excellent song writers and one fantastic producer in George Martin. The Beach Boys on the other hand had Brian Wilson who had to do everything himself (compose, produce and perform). In retrospect I think it would have been wise for the two groups to have merged and formed one mega-group that could have dominated popular music for decades. Kind of a white Motown that could have pumped out hits like the mother creature in Alien

McCartney is just a god of songwriting, a total genius and to hear him underline how awe inspiring WILSON was is great. The Beatles might have the edge with most people but for me it’ll always ALWAYS be The Beach Boys and that special glittery magic Brian dusted everything with. It was sonic sunshine. The Beatles were about the reality of sometimes grimy British life and I love them for it - my second favourite band - but when I heard the Beach Boys at age 6 (Good Vibrations on the radio) I was hooked. Transported to a different place, a world of possibilities. I’ve heard certain contemporary artists diss him recently, say it’s overrated. The people who say that might’ve written a good bunch of songs but now they’re just struggling to stay relevant and the only way they think they can do that is trashing others. They’re obviously very insecure. We’ll be humming California Girls and Wouldn’t it Be Nice long after that guy’s songs have vanished

I think after Sgt. Peppers came out, Brian heard it and went to write and produce the SMiLE album, but unfortunately it got shelved in 1967 and we got 'Smiley Smile' instead. Thankfully Brian allowed "SMiLE" to sort-of be released with 2004's 'Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE', and we officially got "The Smile Sessions" as basically *THE* SMiLE Album.

1) Smile officially began production on February 17th, 1966 and Sgt. Pepper's was released on May 26th, 1967, so no. 2) The Smile Sessions is not Smile, it used Brian's 2004 album as a guide for the tracks, and even that album isn't Smile fully realized, Brian basically just took what was already recorded, filled in the missing lyrics, and turned it into one cohesive album that could be performed live relatively easily. We never ever got Brian's original vision fully realized.

The Beach boys were actually one of if not the first group to popularize the multi-guitar, electric bass and Drum ensemble. Before them most groups were just singers with a backing band, or a singer playing guitar, or a singing group with a backing lead sax etc. The BBs made popular the whole act as singers as a unit playing their own string instruments and drums. Not saying it hadn't been done but they popularized it with hit after hit in the early 1960s. Soon other groups followed the same pattern.

Being a 70 year old, I grew up in my pre teen and teenage years listening to what is typically called classic rock. Played in bands as well and I like all kinds of music. I liked Beach Boys early on as well. But pop and rock music changed drastically when Beatles came about. Each new Beatles album was eagerly awaited by the majority of young people in US and much of the western world I suspect. This was not the case with The Beach Boys and their music never permeated culture in the way the Beatles music did. I still really liked a lot of the BBoys stuff after Beatles came around but they never put out albums with as many high quality songs as the Beatles. Very few people considered Pet Sounds a masterpiece when it came out. In fact it was a bit of a dud commercially I believe, although it’s stature has grown over the years. So maybe it is the best BB record for a variety of reasons but I don’t consider it on par with Sgt. Peppers and I personally think Revolver is better than SP. and maybe Abbey Road is as well. The white album is also very strong but with a couple of duds ( #9 e.g.). So the Beatles have many very strong albums, The Beach Boys, not so much, although they have a boatload of great songs.
@pnutbutrncrackers

I've never understood why people talk about which album was more anticipated by 'the culture' at the time, etc. -- as though that necessarily means anything as to the quality of the music. I have ears and a lifetime of musical experience (playing & appreciating) and don't need 1960's culture to tell me that the Beach Boys DID put out a slew of "high quality songs". I've assembled my own selective Spotify playlists for each group and the Beatles' list probably contains about ten more songs, but both were absolute high points in popular music, both with songs reaching the highest echelon.

He did do Sgt Pepper, and artistically speaking - it was not better. But simultaneously, SMiLE (Brian's successor to Pet Sounds) could have theoretically dropped before Sgt Pepper and again, artistically speaking - there's just no competition. Pet Sounds was the unified vision of one individual, with one lyrical collaborator - the same formula with SMiLE - whereas, Sgt Peppers fails to achieve any thematic cohesion other than its production, which was handled by George Martin. I love The Beatles, and while The Beatles are greater The Beach Boys - Brian Wilson is greater than the sum of each part of The Beatles, if that makes sense? Basically, one man from Hawthorne CA was competing against a 5 man unit single handedly
