Nice one lads. As an Inishowen McLaughlin, it would be interesting to know how much history the clan descendants were aware of. Not that anyone in Ulster had a great time over the last few hundred years, but the anecdotes from my father's family all indicate a pretty big chip on the collective McLaughlin shoulder particularly family heads. Did this discontent stem from any awareness of former clan greatness, as their lands were taken first by the O'Doherty's and then by the English? Or is it just the general discontent of an oppressed people common to any Catholic under English rule? I admit to exasperation when reading through medieval Ulster history - how different indeed would things have been if the natives could have put up more of a fight against the Normans. The romanticisation of the Earls is also a source of exasperation - why idolise leaders who failed to protect their people, and ultimately ran away and left the rest to their fates? Anyhow, enough of that. Thought I'd also mention the story of the last MacLochlainn to exercise the chiefship - Diarmaid; who raised a company of soldiers to fight against William of Orange. He was granted arms by James III (the old pretender), which is the arms you generally see today associated with the name (as opposed to the Scottish clan's).

Thank you !! I have often pondered the "what if", If a united Irish front would have changed anything, personally i believe not, we were to few to contend with the many, I will have to research Diarmait although i dont cover after 1603 so the battle of the Boyne would normally be outside my main area its still interesting to see which Irish families held some sway around this time.

Although there isn't yet a super large showing of Y-DNA tested McLaughlin men at this time it so far is estimated that the oldest (maybe largest) related branch of McLaughlins would fall under R1b-PF2028 branch of mankind. Again though, a lot more McLaughlin men need to perform some Next Generation Sequencing of their Y Chromosome (i.e., Big Y 700 test at FTDNA or Whole Genome Sequencing at other companies) to evaluate their Y-SNP mutations and see if surname carriers of the name today continue to cluster under this branch.

Interesting thanks for detailing this history. I thought that the Scottish Mclaughlins were branched from the Oneil's? The Maclachlan clan is descended from Lachlan Mor (‘Great Lachlan’) a powerful chieftain who lived on the shores of Loch Fyne in the 13th century. Lachlan Mor is said to be descended from Anrothan O’Neill an Irish prince who left Ireland in the 11th (Ive seen 1150 mentioned frequently) century. A further line of descents is claimed from Anrothan O’Neill to the High King of Ireland, Niall Noigiallach, who ruled in the 4th to 5th century.

Hello, well Derry would be McLaughlin heartlands, i always reckon its worth doing the Ydna test from places like Ftdna rather than the autosmal dna you get from places like Ancestry, once you get one of these there are McLaughlin groups on Ftdna that try to pool the information together, Dr Tyrone Bowes from irish origenes also has plenty of irish case studies he may also be able to compare your data with. DNA testing isnt cheap i know, there are ways to help get a better idea on your line of descent but Dna is the only actual way to know.

@@Clans_Dynasties thank you so much for replying to me. I had a My Heritage DNA test done…. it was so generic to be almost meaningless. I’d already guessed I might be of Irish, Scottish and Welsh ethnicity, although traces of Iberian and Baltic added some colour lol. I’ll look into Ydna as you suggest. I’ve found myself interested in the history of the McLaughlin’s, particularly the loss of the kingship, and have spent some time trying to find the location of the Battle of Caimeirgei (Crooked rise) in 1241, plausibly near an esker in Davagh. There is a lot of interesting speculation around this battle, but as you said, it was catastrophic for the McLaughlin’s who it is believed were hopelessly outnumbered by the two opposing armies, and who according to the Annals of Ulster, lost most of their nobles during the battle. As an interesting aside, I understood it was through a marriage alliance of Domnall’s daughter to Brain O’Niell that the power of the family was preserved in the Innishowen peninsula. Thanks again. Enjoyed your video.

@@esmcl, to drive back this far you need access to the Y Chromosome of your McLaughlin family. So if you are a male McLaughlin yourself, you will have this Y Chromosome. The reason being is because it is the only type of DNA that is 100% passed on from generation to generation down a patriline (father to sons, father to sons, etc.). Autosomal DNA (Ancestry, 23andMe, MyHeritage, etc.) does not work here because this pulls from all lines of ancestry and tends to wash out drastically around 5 generations above the test taker. Most of this testing with matching to other testers is done at Family Tree DNA. Entry level test is Y37 STR marker which will show matches, but if you fall under what maybe considered the main branch under R1b-DF105 then you'd be looking to invest in the comprehensive Big Y 700 (expensive but future proof type of Y-DNA test that continues to give results as more matches join the database).

@@Clans_Dynasties Ok Thank you so much ! The Clan MacFarlane, originally an Irish Clan, that went to Scotland and settled in Loch Lomond, Their chiefs then came back to Ireland in the time of James VII and settled mostly in Tyrone. The question is why are they rarely mentioned in Irish Clan histories when in fact my research tells me they were a "literary sept of Oriel" and they were up there fighting in the Irish Rebellions with the O'Neils and others. Ii think they were chiefs probably descended from the Three Collas but i'm having my DNA checked again for that and i have finally found a male McFarland cousin who is willing to do the YDNA test. So we shall see -the clan needs more IRISH male testers to find out ! Do the YDNA test with FTDNA and join the Clan MacFarlane Project PLEASE !

Thank you!! There are like 5 origin points that i know off off the top of my head, 4 irish, 1 Scottish, your current location may be the best indicator if you havent had a DNA test but it is by no means a definitive answer, if you live in or around Antrim there is a strong possibility you are of the Scottish line based on migration trends, if you live near Fernmanagh, Cork, Donegal, Offaly you may decended from the other branches. You are very welcome, we know Randal Macdonald, Earl of Antrim started settling lowlanders into Antrim in 1607, by 1630 there were 800 families on his estates, being as his undertakers were lowlanders and the McAuley/Gawley were highlanders, The family probably came across with William Adair of the barony of Upper Toome (originally of Kinhilt) in 1620ish, another thing to look at is a recent studied showed that of the Presbyterian families that came from Scotland 80% are still Presbyterians so if your male line is of Presbyterian descent then this may tie in with you nicely. If your from south down and of Catholic or COI descent maybe be worth looking into the Meath line of the family although id say that's a more tenious link.

Thanks for the video as always. You both provided clarity on how exactly the different variations of the McLoughlin, McLaughlin and O'Laughlin surname came into existence. It is so important to understand the differences between the family names because they seem to have been created separately and were likely later corrupted together. Although there may of course be some overlap in a common ancestor, the branches should be viewed as quite distant from each other. It is interesting you mentioned near the end of the video a Northern branch still being abundant in around Inishowen. What is also very fascinating to me is that you'll still find many McLoughlin in the midlands Clann Cholmáin territory - particularly in the Counties of Meath, Dublin and Westmeath. It can be amusing to be a McLoughlin in Ireland, particularly in the town i'm from, where there must be about 5 different McLoughlin family groups of no close relation to each other and all spelled totally different. I'm personally a massive fan and reader of Medieval History. However, I've never invested my time into following my genealogy down to the finest detail (although it is charming to discover something of one's lineage). This next bit is of little relevance to the discussion and is outside the time period discussed in the video however it is worth mentioning I feel; once as an exercise I tried searching the 1911 Census of Ireland and looking for McLoughlin in Dublin. A pure disaster to find whoever you're looking for when you don't include a forename - there's just too many families of the same surname! Take it easy lads. You both are doing an excellent job with the content and entertainment. Keep up the great work - I look forward to your project coming up 'The Clans of Bannockburn'. Kind regards.
