I am disturbed that we live in a society that thinks attacking a worker for a break is reasonable. This lack of solidarity is why we lack worker rights across the board.

I’m a bus driver in the UK. What amazes me is that people know that a bus will arrive at a stop with a 10 minute layover but expect to board the moment the bus turns up. If it is a dry day I now go for a 5 minute walk so that when I return to the bus I then log back on to the ticket machine and board the passengers.

As I said in a previous comment I had someone board 90 minutes early once. I figured they might as well sit in the bus as on the bench outside as I didn't mind.

@@janpersson9818 Well good for you, but not everyone wants to be bothered during their break. And consider yourself fortunate that you have a break that lasts 90 minutes. Most of us are lucky to get even 5 or 10 minutes. If people are too impatient to wait a few minutes, then that’s they’re problem. I’m sure at their job they don’t want to be bothered during their break/lunch.

We are public servants, not a public doormats. The healthiest person on a bus should be a transit driver, so if doing some stretching, eating a sandwich, or debriefing people's stupidity whether on the bus or outside the bus is a crime then keep pushing us drivers and the "I WANT TO PUNCH YOU SQUARE IN THE FACE MOMENTS" won't be just in our heads. I like my power naps and some music 🎶for a few moments. It recharges me and another thing. A driver with a FULL BLADDER will make much more serious driver's errors than a driver with an empty bladder. These people in their little bubble worlds are HILARIOUS

I will often go to the bathroom or into a store to get a moment alone. Passengers really do not understand how important it is to have a few minutes without interruption to clear your mind. Once I went to the bathroom to be alone and had a passenger yell at me, telling me I was being rude because I wasn’t greeting her and everyone else in the bathroom. I practically yelled back “this is my safe space!!” And almost started crying (it had been a rough day). She didn’t care.

What my transit agency does at some transit centers here is they'll have a separate parking area for the buses to take breaks, away from where the passengers load, then the bus will just pull up to the stop and let passengers on when it's the departure time.

One time I had a passenger call me rude for not opening my doors when I arrived at the loop to go do my check for sleeping passengers/lost items rule. The bus i had the doors cannot open when the engine is off. I had to explain to him that he had to wait for a minute. I don't know if you guys and everyone else as fellow operators experience this bus sometimes we have no leader and the bus stops get crowded leading to a full packed bus. People wanting the bus on the other side will notice that and ride with you to go around. Well at the end of the loop they thought they get to stay on but I needed to use the restroom and they was upset because of it. I still even have 5 minutes left despite how late I was running. Sometimes they do treat us like slaves. We have a rule that people are not allowed to be on the bus unattended and if we are on the bus and the next to depart, we are to pull up to the stand with our doors open. I'm not sitting on the bus for 24 minutes just so you can sit. I use that time to go on my cardio exercise. I sit enough driving already. That rule is there because they abuse the system by walking on the bus and not paying their fare. They ruined it for themselves.

It is always office workers who criticise transport and manual labour workers because they think we are lesser than them. Just because we don't do "academic" roles doesn't mean we aren't smart or deserve poor treatment. Just because we work customer service doesn't make us servants. The ignorance is real. They are able to use the bathroom anytime and take 10-15 minutes in there to check their phone... and they are paid for it! As long as you are staying within legal entitlements regarding breaks, you cannot lose your job lawfully. The passengers need to suck it up. If there is an emergency situation (like impending explosive diarrhoea), I think it's more than acceptable to embark and do your thing... for the safety of everyone 🤣

When I worked major routes, Gratiot, 6,7,& 8 mile, Dexter, Greenfield, (Detroit DOT) I pulled to the end of the line and I will announce waiting passengers I am not the next bus departing. When passengers get angry, I close the doors and observe them catching the bus ahead mine and if the bus is out of service, then I would board them. Policy says board passengers during layover. So I do so on the minor slower routes Mack, Tireman, Joy, Russell, Clairmount, Chene, Chalmers, Cadillac-Harper, Conner, Southfield, Puritan, Schoolcraft, Chicago-Davison, Schaefer, Wyoming, Linwood, Livernois, (Detroit DOT) because I am the only and next bus departing.

@Bus Driver Life that driver was driving a trolley bus therefore when his bus arrived at Metrotown station he wasn’t able to pull his bus away from the platform to take a break. At Metrotown station there are several parking spots for buses to park in while the drivers are taking a break, the trolley buses can’t do this because they are attached to the overhead power wires. Also the Metrotown bus loop doesn’t have a crew room where the drivers can hang out while on break(there’s just a couple of bathrooms for the drivers at the bus loop). As for the passengers that “had to wait” for 10minutes in the cold weather, those passengers could have easily gone back into the mall & waited inside the mall for about another 8minutes before returning to the bus.

Breaks should be mandatory. once, I had to return home because of inclement weather. I really did not have a timetable, i just wanted to get home. I must have been waiting at a bus stop for 20 minutes or something (Normally i'd have a bus in 15 minutes, but this isnt normal). There were no buses in the layover area. One moment a bus shows up to drop passengers off. Immediately takes a break. Good for that operator. he was probably working for upwards of one hour on a trip that should have taken 40 minutes. A few moments later another bus shows up, drops off their passengers at the end of the line, and starts the next trip. I remember telling the operator having seen that they should take a break. I will back them up, the union will back them up, the other operator back them up, and ultimately the agency will back them up as well for safety reasons. He still went ahead with the trip. Not many people were riding, which doesnt mean much to people like me who want to get home, i want to feel that I'm important, but breaks are crucial. There are a few hills on the route and I dont know how much experince you have with snow, but snow and hills dont go well when driving a transit bus. There is a reroute but that adds time obviously. I wish that operator had waited ten minutes as much as it would have sucked for me. Maybe let me on the bus if he wants to be nice (not expected or required, its his break), still wait the ten minutes. Thank you for serving Sacramento.

As a new subscriber it is December 13th 2020 I know this video is almost a month old. but I do agree you deserve a reasonable break in case you need to use the restroom or have a simple lunch break and many times that can be 10 or 15 minutes depending on when you show up to a location or at the end of the line period in Detroit would DDOT buses many of their in the line these people abuse it and where they're supposed to pull off in 10 minutes they may make you wait 20 minutes or longer and this is on a continuous basis seven days a week no matter the season. I myself am inspiring to get my class b in 2021 and there are some things that I can relate to and some things I can't relate to now. if one has to go to the restroom they should be allowed to relieve themselves you know especially if they're going to is going to take them an hour to get back to their main location and we pick up again but as far as just going to sleep as I have seen some that's not necessary and I'm not saying everybody does that but it is a few that don't have the right regards. I've seen some here in Detroit Michigan with DDOT bus system they don't pay them well so it makes the driver become hostile nasty and just downright irritated and snapping all the time and snapping that many of the passengers that rightfully so did not do anything and sometimes you got some passengers that can be a pain in the butt so I can relay on all entities of it but at the end of the day I say that this is a job that one should work long enough to stack their money pay off some bills if they owe a lot maybe pay for them a home and keep it moving this shouldn't be a job you should retire from if at all possible let's be clear have a pleasant new week of December 14th 2020. 😎😇🤦🏻♀️😵❄️💸😤🎄🎄
