Los Angeles board certified facial plastic surgeons, Dr. Jason Litner and Dr. Peyman Solieman discuss the different medication, supplements and herbal supplements patients should avoid before and after surgery. It is important to inform your surgeon about any medications or supplements you may be taking. Some medications and supplements can increase the risk of bruising, therefore prolonging the recovery period. Generally, patients need to avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, Advil and Motrin. Herbal supplements such as fish oil, vitamin E, ginseng and ginkgo should be avoided as well. If the patient is suffering from a heart condition and needs to take certain medications, our surgeons will work with your cardiologist or internist to determine the appropriate course of action.
Generally, patients should stop taking these medications and supplements at least 2 weeks before and after surgery. A comprehensive list of medications and supplements to stop can be found at your surgeon's office.
