Very impressive Mark but way, way above my head, you're a very clever bloke to be able to sort that lot out mate. I fully understand why you are using this method rather than point motors (lack of space) and I'm sure this will be really helpful information for those considering going this route. ............Graham

Thank you Graham, means a lot coming from you mate :0) Believe me when I say that it was all over my head as well when I started, hence the phone calls to Dave Fenton, but then as I broke everything down into smaller chunks it started to make sense and then I'd just keep repeating everything over and over again till it sunk in. I'll tell you what though buddy, I don't think it's much cheaper than going the way of IP point motors, to get to this stage with relays and DCC has hiked up the price quite a bit, so when I have the first 9 turnouts operational on the fiddle yard I will do a price comparison between 12 servos and 12 IP motors, that should be interesting :0)

I'm sure with anything new like that and you haven't been through the process before then it is all going to be a bit confusing but at least you have some form of electrical knowledge which most likely helps you understand better than anything I would do - I wouldn't even know how or what to do with that multimeter thing you have !! lol. ...........Graham

Hi Phil and so pleased the video was helpful, just sorry I did the bit about deleting my video folder as I think this has detracted from what the video was all about. But the next update will be adding the DCC adaptor board and then the 3rd video will be adding the relays.

One of the nice things or bad is computers never really delete anything so if you don't save things to the hard drive wright away you can get you info back with software. The best way is to back your info up. Great video.

Exactly Scott, after the initial panic I remember back in the old days when we use to perform the 'defragment' thingy on the hard drive and that everything was basically 'blocks' of data and that when you stored something it was kinda set as read only so wouldn't be written over, and when you deleted anything it just revered that and made it writable and not readable, but I had to be quick though before anything was written over, sadly I wasn't quick enough so los some videos but hey, they're on for YT and nothing personal memory wise so no great great lose, at least it's freed up a load of space on my external hard drive lol :0)

Oh Mark! All your eggs in one basket.............................................! The phrase has a meaning! Glad you resolved the issue. I've been looking at MegaPoints with interest for a while; still not sure it's for my next project but it is of interest. I'm wanting to make a Level Crossing and don't want to go 'over the top' but it looks good for my purposes. Still got to get my head round it.... watching with interest! Best etc. Bob

Hi Bob, yea all eggs in one basket but some of those eggs have been found, those that haven't have made a great omelette lol. Ok, the MegaPoint Servo Controller is so very versatile, I have shown it operating 12 servos for point motors but it can also handle a mixture of options, so say 4 servos on points, 6 servos on signals and then maybe 2 servos on level crossings, all from one board, I haven't looked in to that yet though but future videos when I get to that stage will. The link below is to one of Dave Fentons videos and at around 3 minutes in to the video he talks about programming the servos to move at a given speed, perfect for level crossing. That's still all over my head at the moment but if you do get the urge to go with this system Dave is only a phone call away and so very helpful.

Hi Mark Firstly can I suggest a program called Acronis, this will make sure that you do not loose anymore videos. I live quite close to Dave Fenton and have watched his videos and I must say have gone over my head. However you have broken it down into bite size chunks so well, and it now make sense and I am looking forward to you future videos. So keep them small and simple Regards John

Hi John and thank you for the positive comments on the video, it was actually quite hard to put everything in words to try and explain how it all worked, plus deleting the videos didn't help either lol The folder was actually on my backup external hard drive where I store all my videos, but to be honest it wasn't such a great dilemma to be honest, they were only videos I made for this channel and of no personal value, they're not videos Debbie and me would sit down in an evening to watch and remember things, but I will be doing things a little bit differently now,. Thanks for the suggestion for Acronis though, really appreciate and might look in to something cloud based a bit more :0)

Hi, one question, the 2 leads at the front are red/white/black , where are they connected? Apart from that great video, look forward to hearing back from you and future videos. Regards Robert
@WesternCenturion

Hi Robert, good point mate, I should have explained in the video, The red/white/black wires were an extension lead to the 11th and 12th servos, their leads were too short to reach to the controller board.

Hi Mark, great video and very grateful you took time to produce it. One question...I seem to recall that you said in previous videos that you'd be getting a regulated power supply to sort out the annoying servo "chatter". In this video seems you have the power supply but the servos can still be heard chattering. Are they meant to do that after all?
@WesternCenturion
7 жыл бұрын
Hi Kenneth, and thank you, it is a real pleasure to make videos for you all and thank you for the appreciation. The power supply I was using was regulated and I have just bought another one which is also regulated but this also doesn't stop the servos from chattering, it's looking like it's the case of what servos you buy, there's so many different types on the market including digital but I have no idea what they are like. Oh and yes, servos are known for their chattering so it's not really a concern and when the trains are running you wont be able to hear them, or at least I hope not :0)

Hi Mark, thanks for explaining how the system works in easy terms. It looks a great system. What next, do you connect it up to another board to throw the points? Cheers John.
@WesternCenturion
7 жыл бұрын
Hi John, that is a really good question, I'm looking at this from a DCC perspective but it is perfect for DC as well, actually I think it was designed for DC in the beginning and what I'm showing in these videos are only just scratching the surface of what it can do. When I first received everything and looked at all the wiring and stuff I was really overwhelmed by it all and thought this is madness, but then I broke it all down in to bite size chunks and i all then made sense. So, the next video we will be adding the DCC adaptor board so we can control the servos via the RailMaster software and then the 3rd video we will add the relays to power the electrofrogs :0)

Great video and very helpful information on the MegaPoints system, it is an interesting system, nicely put together by the designer! Being a nerd myself, I will resonate the comments below, with so much data always wise to backup, or at least backup the important videos. Accidents happen but it's hit and miss relying on recovery software (plus there's a lot of scams out there). Glad you have sorted it though! Oh and could you link me where you got the power supply please? Have a good week. Des

Hi Des and thank you mate, I didn't mean for my little mishap to distract from what the video was meant to be all about, should have done a separate one now I think it of it. Ironically, the folder was on my external backup drive, it's there where I store all my YT videos, but it's no great lose as no personal memory videos were on there. Oh and the PSU is one I borrowed from work but I have bought one from eBay and it turned up today, and it's a cracker of a PSU, link below, but I would recommend putting an inline fuse on each of the outputs, 20A would fry everything if there were a short. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DC12V-24V-Universal-Regulated-Switching-Power-Supply-LED-CCTV-PSU-UK-Stock/302304359121?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&var=601142509533&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Aw thank you Des, that is one of the things I wanted to do when I started this channel, to actually appear in the videos and not just be a voice behind them and to add a little bit of humor, basically just be myself, hence no rehearsals or scripts, it's all off the cuff so to speak, that's why I make sooooooooo many mistakes lol.

As a long time IT Network Manager, I can't help but ask where were your backups? It is time to buy an additional external drive or drives and begin a backup regiment. You can find out how on KZitem anywhere to recover from possible worse issues that may happen. The new drive that's $150US or much less for 4TB is cheap insurance. It's a wake up call.
