The little tenor who sings David (Erwin Wohlfahrt) was in his early thirties when he sang this, and he died three years later at the age of 37. Very sad. He is still one of the best in the role of Mime in SIEGFRIED, on one of Böhm's recordings. There's never been anyone else quite like him.

Windgassen was such an elegant, fine artist. Perhaps his voice wasn't HUGE, but he worked within his "limits", and left us a great body of work. I'll take his work over most of the postwar Wagnerian Tenors...

Greindl was a great actor as well as a great singer.

Oh my god, this is so great. Don't overlook Beckmesser, played by a baritone called Carlos Alexander. His singing is wonderful and his acting, his body-language, is unusually engaging and sympathetic. This is the big challenge of this role, to make the audience identify with the suffering of this slimy, repulsive villain, who, (unlike other slimy repulsive creeps like Falstaff) is NOT the main character. And he really looks the part, and the way he and Greindl interact during the confrontation over the song-manuscript, the close face-to-face where neither yields an inch, is directed and realized so perfectly, I've never seen it done so well before. Thank you for posting the whole thing; I've seen bits of it before, but never the scene with Beckmesser; other KZitem posters always seem to leave it out.

Hi there, you can also see him in Otto Schenk's production Die Fledermaus. He is wonderful in that.

Wagner wrote the part for a high bass and Greindl was a low bass, but his Hans Sachs was truly wonderful, full of wisdom, humour and humanity and with a magnetic stage presence.

I listened to Weichl last night- vocally, I think he's about as perfect a singer for the role who's ever sung it- he's my favorite, but Greindl is wonderful!!!! The language is VERY important in this tradition... Greindl, it's like listening to Dieskau; one could take IPA dictation, and miss nothing...

Greindl's articulation and musicality are every bit as great as Fischer-Dieskau's, but unlike Fischer-Dieskau, Greindl also has a powerful voice with full body and lots of beef. SOOO much stronger than DFD's teeny-weenie chirping and piping. I don't think DFD would have been able to sing the whole role of Sachs in a theater; he'd have had to drop out. The part would be too much for his little voice. DFD recorded as Hans Sachs in studio, never in theater. And he played Fritz Kothner the baker (at Bayreuth in 1956). But he never performed, and never recorded, the role which was right for his voice, which is Beckmesser. WHY didn't DFD sing as Beckmesser? It would have been perfect.
