I still think it's one of the greatest Idol performances ever. I think it was underrated even by the judges how great this was.

With this performance, I am convinced Melinda fooled all of us. She really is a pro in all levels and shouldn't even be competing with all these teenie boppers who don't come close to her caliber

Current and old school. She sang the not often heard verse. She gave a modern vibe to the jazz standard. She is amazing. She did not win. Even back then, America could not get it right.

She is phenomenal. I've been watching the videos of her performances on AI for two days and I'm yet to find one that didn't have me amazed, blown away, tear up, grin... It's weird that she was even on this show, which is a competition; she's shouldn't even have been in the same league with the other contestants. She's in a completely different, much higher class. Wow.

I also wanted to say "I've Got Rhythm" is an older song and is part of the Great American songbook and the great thing that Melinda Doolittle did is that she interpreted the song the way it SHOULD be interpreted and it looks as if she read the lyrics and it shows throughout this extraordinary performance. This is something that I think many singers lack today that they didn't lack back then: they read the lyrics in these songs and use their raw vocals (without autotune) to express the song.

This performance for me was the proof that (no matter what) Melinda will have a fantastic career. She proved she could do R&B, power ballads, jazz standards and uptempo. Now she was conquering show tunes. What?!! Incredible vocals, owning the stage, turning to give the band props before taking her bow... Yeah,(2:05) you got it, girl!

I agree with you that American Idol has become more of a popularity contest and more and more less of an actual singing competition. But Jordin didn't have a Beyonce figure either. Personally I was a huge Jordin fan but I really liked Melinda too. I think Jordin deserved to win hands down, but I also think that Melinda should be more famous than she is. In general, I think their season was the last season where the truly great singers actually made it far in the competition (for the most part).

Avatarzurc I completely agree with you and it's a shame that the music business these days go more for looks and appearance and that's why most singers today in my opinion sound so much a like and don't sing like singers did in the past. I don't think really Jordin Sparks is that great because there are alot of singers out there who sings like her but is there anything about her that will make her stand out--does she have that signature mark that everyone can say "THAT'S JORDIN SPARKS!"?

It's so sad - I bet if the executives running the show would take a risk and let a singer like this go through to win, they would see that people would respond much more to this than another bimbo with a decent voice. Melinda could have a fantastic and long-lived career - not just some over-produced one hit wonder only to be forgotten when they whore next year's winner.

Melinda is a nuanced, sophisticated singer. Unfortunately in today's music scene, particularly in the black / urban scene where most black artists are marketed, there isn't a place for a singer who isn't giving neck-rolling runs in every performance. The expectation is as per Simon's comments...Wail black girl, wail! Why can't Melinda have a career like Michael Buble? She has the same adult appeal, and can give us the sangin' that we love so much! We really need to support ALL of our talent!
