I haven’t been following the fact that you’ve been doing more mesh networking out there. This looks really cool. : ). We need this built into emergency radios. I know there was a commercial device that was started on kickstart I think and that was the last time I saw this but that was several years ago

This is really cool, I didn't know anything remotely like this was even possible, when I get the chance I'll have to look into either buying some of this hardware or making my own. I am a bit curious though, is it capable to use an internet extension of the mesh network? For instance, say you have two remote places that are kilometers apart but both have internet and you want to completely cover the area around each of those places with a mesh network, could you link the networks together using the internet so that messages sent on one of the networks could reach the other, or does meshtastic *_exclusively_* work through the mesh with no ability to do that sort of linking?

You would need other Rak or T-Beam LORA repeaters between home and camp in order to relay the signal.

Mesh is a method of passing on data between nodes. Modern wifi access points can often pass data to each-other extending the range in a home; that is a type of mesh network. Meshtastic is an implementation of the LORA radio standard to allow very long range communications at very low wattage; but with low bandwidth (no voice and only short text messages). Whats the point of a meshtastic network. Mostly for fun or as a last resort form of communications. Recently with the war in Ukrane and Elon turning off the satellites because he was having a tantrum. People have taken more interest in off grid communications. Ways to communicate even if the cell network and internet was turned off. Methods of communicating that are not subject to big business spying on you. My use case is camping and being able to find other vehicles and message them while out of cell range. GPS enabled Meshtastic radios are a very good way to keep everyone (vehicles and people on foot) communicating even when spread out over very long distances; without needing to know how to use a radio. Line of site LORA can work over a hundred miles. With some basic base stations on top of high spots you can setup a mesh network over huge areas quickly and inexpensively. With 2 drones you could probably get a signal a few hundred miles while the drones were in flight.

Modern HAM radio
@huskermike8096

Naw. Ham radio has way more capability. APRS blows the socks off this in terms of range and easy of use. But this can be air gapped, uses 915 feq. and is AES256 encrypted. Thats what makes this useful. Im doing D&D on a node that has a yagi antenna that will connect cities. Family and contacts in different regions will be able to utilize this technology.
@austinmesh

I'm a ham and agree that APRS is awesome - I use it nearly every week during APRS thursdays. However APRS is not super useful for connecting to non-hams. SMSgte is offline because of some issue with spam and winlink over APRS is pretty limited. This system is a great alternative for people who want to communicate with non-hams.

@@dwellerinblack7816 fr, the possibilities are crazy on both ends of the spectrum. If you need to connect various devices over long range but don't have internet or cell service for communication, assuming you're ok with simple text messaging (no images, video, streaming, etc), LoRa mesh networks are a good alternative. You essentially build a mini private network with low-power devices and no internet subscription or licensing fees, permits. I just learned about this stuff today so that's my understanding of it.
@thirtythreeeyes8624

@@straightup7up Pretty much summed it up. The project mainly mentioned back country usage but, I can think of other use cases where you need a private form of communication that can't be turned off maybe in a country like Iran for instance these would be invaluable.

Wouldn't these be more successful if you didn't have to be an electronics expert to use them? I see videos and info about these things everywhere, but they're always a pile of parts or well over $100 bucks if someone builds it for you. There's no guarantee you could ever use them for anything practical, so the cost level and skill level create an enormous barrier to entry.

Your point is valid. Some of these devices are inexpensive though. For around 54$ You can have 2 radios, batteries are about 22$ but sold in sets of 4 so, 130 for 4 nodes from amazon. Now you and 3 people can talk to each other and anyone locally who has a node. Meshtastic has a community updated map of nodes you may be able to connect to. The Lilygo t-echo takes all the electronics knowledge out of the equation for about 70USD each and it has a GPS. The T-echo is a fantastic product if you have a bunch of people who go hiking, offroading or kayaking together. The GPS reports the position of every radio so you can locate each other. With a little effort on your android or apple device you can all talk and keep in touch when off grid. Not inexpensive by international standards but less than we spent on each player to setup a soft ball team. To compare to another form of communications. I spent about 300$ on my GMRS radio my license cost 35$ and I bought another radio for my GF to talk to me on for 60$. My buddy spent 50$ on his radio and 35 on his license. So it ended up a lot more expensive than a few Meshtastic nodes would be. Granted GMRS is voice not text. The software is easy to use for the most part. The firmware is easy to update on Meshtastic's web page. But these are devolpment boards so 100% they are not a commercial ready product. But that isn't really the point. Communications is a skill and some of us enjoy developing that skill. If you are old enough to remember September 11 in NYC. The phones all went down as did the internet. With Meshtastic nodes you could have kept communicating after the infrastructure fails.

@@michaelbuddy literally, I help and contribute to the FOSS to develop privacy and secu for over two decades. but seriously if you can't take a simple critique, crafting just a case is not that hard if you do electronics stuff or retrieve items like that blackberry keyboard (i will never use mine for a thing like that) get a sense of aesthetics, it is also important as the hardware itself. apple terminals looks like shit, minimalism is the absence of design. if this is your only reference, you have a problem. ThinkPads are aesthetics. Sony VAIOs also have aesthetics. even like, I even find a late 90's motorola talkie or Philips GSM that's gets more aesthetic than an overpriced slab of glass made in china, it's not hard you start from nothing, with 3d printing and more. UI design also counts a lot - that's my job. and there is no more design, so what I tell the guy is to stop burying design and make something that is not an eyesore.
