For something aimed at utility, I always put the nut on the outside of the bottom plate...If something goes wrong, it's a lot easier to cut/grind the nut off and replace it than to remove/replace the whole bottom plate on the leg.

See if we can’t screw it up - been there done that. Just sharing a suggestion.... when I made the adjustable feet for my small work bench I used a holesaw and cut 2” discs out of 1/8” plate instead of washers. Same concept possibly a bit more stable then washers. And it still fits within the footprint of the 2 1/2 square tubing.
@JustVoss

Yeah you’re right the disc would be a little stronger, less prone to bend.

Good video but too long of a process. There are many furniture glides and levellers that you can purchase. Plus you can also cut the plate so it’ll sit inside the tube using .250 thick material and tapping it. This hides the leveller giving you a cleaner look. If your concept is for a shop table no big deal. If it’s for inside your home show piece keeping it hidden allows you to keep the base of the leg on the floor not floating .500 above the ground. Why not use a stainless bolt and washer eliminating the cleaning prep time. It’s just a lot of unjust able fabrication charges to a customer. As a KZitem content creator it’s a good video. Great welds.

Not seeing the point of grinding the flats off the bolt. Keep them on and you can adjust the feet with a wrench. In fact, no need to add anything, and just use the bolt as is for the feet. Widening them doesn't add anything and since you then need a larger flat spot on the floor, it may not sit level.
@jamescrud
4 жыл бұрын
I don't think these feet will sit flat on the floor because the foot and stud (bolt) are one piece. Leveling feet are typically made in 2 pieces where the foot pad can swivel (ball joint) which allows it to sit flat against the floor while the stud changes angle slightly as you thread it in or out of the leg.

Your welds look great. And the camera work is really good. If I could offer one enhancement for next time. Drill out a 1/2 inch nut so that it slides over the threads to the bottom of the foot. Then weld it in place. Now you can use a wrench to raise or lower that side of the table with some precision.

That table will look like an elephant on stilts with those tiny bolts. I would go way bigger. I used M12 bolts on a 40x40mm square tube and I would have gone for M14 but the nut would not fit the tube, I use flange nuts on the inside as they are easier to weld.

Welding that nut to plate you could use a tapered bolt to give it a little more centered placement. It helps prevent the nut/bolt threads from getting so close to the edge that you need to tap new threads.

I was confused why you had to tap that bottom plate near the end.. thought the bolt was already pushed through it when you welded the nut on? Did you tap all the way through the nut? If not, how'd you get the threads to line up? 😅

Seemed like the threads distorted due to the welding, and made attaching the foot a PITA, so he probably ran the tap through to recut the threads.
