SUMMARY: I show highlights of my day at the 2021 Quartzsite Arizona Rock, Gem, Mineral, & Meteorite Show. You will see the highest quality complete glossy black fusion crusted 31g hunk of MARS and a nearly 3kg Eucrite!! I showcase my friend's meteorites they have for sale and we look at them in great detail. Those friends are: Ismaily Mohamed (esmailytrilobiteerfoud@gmail.com) and Mohammed Hmani (www.sahara-nayzak.com). We examined what could possibly be a Carbonaceous chondrite and hypothesize as to what it is.
At the show, I purchased an 88g slice of Dar el Kahal from the main mass holder. It is an H5-6 2013 find from Mail with a great metal and troilite (Iron Sulfide) inclusion. I also bought two oriented unclassified Moroccan Irons. We discuss the exterior features and discuss the orientation possibilities. I proudly display my new 2.6g and 2.4g NWA 12954, the Martian Shergottite mentioned above. They are also oriented! I have plenty of inventory of paired NWA 2400 (MetBull paired with NWA 011) a special Achondrite-ung. Unfortunately, we had to discuss my Gibeon acid etching disaster also.
Marco Gaisser and Maxime Denoncin check-in with videos with amazing production quality. Their skillful photography and insightful narrative are very enjoyable. The specimens that are presented are extremely varied today. I am truly as excited to include them every week as they are excited to submit videos weekly. It is an honor and a privilege to partner with them.
Marco shows a super-oriented 28g Sikhote-Alin with dripping flow lines on both sides, an oriented 7.5g Camel Donga (his first HED), and the final oriented meteorite was an unclassified NWA weighing 224.8g. The rollover lip on the Sikhote-Alin and the flow lines on the chondrites got gasps.
Maxime Has been enjoying his time rediscovering his collection of micros and other samples with the help of a new microscope. The structure of his NWA 5400 is kinda unique and intriguing. It is classified as a Brachinite-like Achondrite-ung. Could it possibly be ejected Earth that reentered the atmosphere? (gotta watch) We revisit his Oued Sfayat, a witnessed H5 fall from Algeria, first showed a few weeks ago. There is a deep metal vein visible in the exposed rock that is rusting on the surface. We need help on how to remedy it without harming the fresh fusion crust. If you have any ideas, besides dental picks, let us know. We also see some beautiful images of rare meteorites including NWA 10645 (Martian Nakhlite), Jbilet Winselwan (CM2), the rare Itqiy (EH7-an), and Metameur 005 (LL3.x).
Mike Kelly got a heck of a deal and surprised with his new Norton County Aubrite, off the second largest mass found on the McKinley farm. There was a surprise on two pieces. He also showed off high metal and low metal Winonaite.
Ron Metchis shared his Udei Station, a 56g Silicated Iron, IAB from Nigeria. His other Iron with a remarkable Widmanstätten pattern was Villa Regina, a 183.5g classed as IIIAB it is from Rio Negro, Argentina.
Pat Brown shared a new document camera with a reflected cross polarized LED light ring. He used this setup to show an 8kg ordinary chondrite that he had shown before. But now we can see through the fusion crust and spy on the interior. He also showed a CO3 with a cut surface with this same camera and light source. We talked about the 150Watt actual consumption LED light from Amazon. I use them in my garage (as designed), but they can also be used as a reflected light for photography. We played guess the weight on a large slice of Allende that was recently cut. The slice still has a musty smell.
I tell a pretty funny an ongoing story about a husband and wife disagreeing about finding a meteorite each. He watches the KZitem Hangouts and decided the best way to put the matter to rest was to get my opinion. It turns out that he found two Earth rocks and she found a possible meteorite that I want to look at further. I share some pictures and we discuss the features that make us believe it possibly is a meteorite. The Tucson Show in April is a topic as well as some other stuff. facebook.com/groups/tucsongemshowhappenings
