After spending about 5 years working in the US in the 1980s, I bought a 2nd hand RV and spent 6 months travelling through the southern US including 6 weeks in Mexico. I stayed away from all the resorts on the coast and spent my time in the mountains. One of the great experiences of my life. Thank you Mexico, from a now 65 year old Aussie.

My genuine belief, is that by learning about history, other cultures, and from first hand experience, you come to this understanding that cuts through all the propaganda, all of the negative press, that 99% of all people are the same. We just want peaceful lives, and we are good to one another. Mexico is incredible. Thank you Van.

Spent 7 months of my life living down in Puerto Escondido last year. Felt as if I was experiencing a place as people did 30 years ago, untainted, and unspoiled. Visited the very much magical lagoon of Chacaua and swam with the bio luminescence, spening my days surfing the wave endlessly right. Way to put your story out there, loved following along.

I'm from Texas and I've been to Mexico once waaay back in 1987 when I was 15. My grandfather lived in Del Rio most of his later years and is buried there. I have a lot of Mexican friends that I grew up with and I've always loved the culture, the food and the people that I've known. And for some reason I'm learning Spanish this year, and so is my wife, always joking that we should just leave all this and move down there. We have friends that we've worked with that have a couple of small houses down there and they always used to joke that we should go down there and fix them up and run a small grocery business. I'm glad you made this video. It's one of your best Van.

I went and lived in Oaxaca for 8 months and I feel the same about Mexico, It's such a surreal and lifechanging experience there. I was fortunate enough to see the Monarchs in Valle de Bravo, and to go surfing in Puerto, and to swim in the bioluminescent water. I spent most of my time in Oaxaca the city, and the people there are so nice, the food is amazing, everything about Mexico is just amazing. It was truly life changing. To any and all who have not gone there for an authentic experience away from the tourists beaches and traps I highly recommend taking a trip and seeing what you can find.

What Van does is different than what Casey did. Its out there all on its own as a brilliant light of a true story teller. Great essay, much more a narrative journey - shades of Spalding Gray - (with the mystical tones of Swimming to Cambodia) than your previous Spirited Man episodes. I like it! At 14 years old I was taken on a similar overland journey through Mexico and came to feel about the country much as you do. I went back several times - and noticing your having highlighted it on the map - including a high school summer session in Saltillo. Then, at 20 years old, a week-long love affair with a sales clerk in Guadalajara. I do miss México!!!

Hello, Mr. Neistat. Watch all your videos, you inspire me in a certain way no one ever did. Just wanted to tell you that im a mexican fílmaker and journalist and felt sad about this video. Mexicans we cant think of the so called magic of our country cause we are tired of thinking how the basic rights are completly erased by a failed state. Were living the worst violence to the women who are being kidnapped and killed everyday. The state tells lies everyday at the news, one of mexico City metro lines fall down Killing people and the Governor blame the company that made the checking inform they had an agénda just to blame her when it was obvious to anyone that the metro didnt had maintence. I mean even if we live here its so hard to be mexican knowing all of this, you know the president? He makes daily press conferences where he says the journalists who investigate and Wanna tell all this truths are against him, and you know here we have no mass shootings but in this country they kill a journalist or a human rights defender everyday week. I feel sad Watching your video cause more than thinking in the paradise we have i wonder everyday every single day how can i go live anywhere else. Thanks for your videos and craft made me reflect and think is my favorite KZitem Channel, think im an spirited man too.

I loved Puerto Escondido and I don't even surf. I went down there for a wedding and it was so much fun walking up and down the street bumping into people I knew who were there for the wedding. One day we went to a smaller village outside of town to see an ancient ball game called Pelota Mixteca. One of the players let me try on his glove and it turns out he's a well known player. My picture of him holding a ball and glove is on the Pelota Mixteca wikipedia page. Mexico IS magical even if you hate that word.

You nail it. That kind of acttitude and dissposition is also important, people seems to travel with close ayes and heart. This still is a paradise in spike of all the gentrification that we experienced in the last 3 years. Sinze I live in Mexico I start feeling that the important is not what a place offers to you (western cities they all offer the same) the really important is what the place allows you to do, and in that sense Mexico still have a lot to offer and more important: for free. Hope you the best in your trip to Puerto, if I see you around with your family I will give you a hug :)
