Last year going to the Beach in Guatemala we were held by 4 gun man who had placed rocks in the curve of the road. I too initially thought they were cops, until i realized there faces were covered in masks and saw the guns. I slammed on breaks as one of them came forward pointing the gun. I tried to put it in reverse and instead it went into neutral. The engine revved really loud and i think they initially thought i would ram them as they all backed up a bit. I managed to get it in neutral and the car jumped backwards. I proceeded to drive backwards on this curvy road and had to stick my head out the window while i hear them yelling as well as my wife screaming to stop… but i didnt stop i just drove backwards. A guy came out of know where from behind us on the back side knocked on the car with his gun yelling to stop.…but i didnt stop… negotiating the curves and trying to keep speed while stealing glances at the guys running at our car…..i just kept going… until my wheel went in a ditch, and i knew it was now or never so i pulled a U and prayed we had the space to make the entire U…. The guys were still running but some 30 feet away. I yelled at the chasing gun men as i spun the car round …. My kids say that i yelled…”i have kids”. But i think i yelled ‘a la verga’, it is tough to say for sure with all the adrenaline of the moment…. There was a great deal of fear involved in this moment….but i basically just think its that risk you take seeking adventure and the fun of traveling the world. It is a very rare but always highly broadcasted event if something scary like this happens. If you are watching this because you are curious about roadtripping in MX - Do not let stories like this scare you away. It has been life changing on every level. We have been driving all over Mexico for 2.5 years and had zero violent issues. Here is what we have learned from locals and have found is absolutely accurate in our experience. People in Mexico use their lights and hazards to communicate to each other much more than we do in the states. You do not want to ever put your left blinker to start passing if there is someone behind you - this tells the driver BEHIND you that you want him to go around you. I was schooled very early on when I put my blinker on to pass, and the car behind me started to pass also and we almost collided. I was told this was abslutely the wrong move. Watch the lights of the car in front of you - if there is one - they will have hazards on when its NOT A GOOD TIME TO PASS, and then they will change and put their left blinker on when they are saying to you that is clear for you to pass. Some extra safety precautions - We have a permanent dash cam and it stays on through any stops. We dont reach for it, or turn it on - its already on and its obviously recording. We do that on purpose. When at checkpoints - know how to say where you are going and where you have been and why - in spanish. Write it down if you have to. Be respectful, use Spanish or a translation app, know your rights, do not have any cash visable - separate it in different places. Flashy cars will be a target much more than an average car - so unless you are roadtripping in a hummer or rover - you have just decreased your visability by about 1000% percent. Dont worry - drive in the daytime hours only - and watch for crater size potholes, a load of speedbumps and livestock on the road - those will be your biggest problems!

If you where alone they would have wanted your whole wallet or killed you. Especially at night. The old school criminals of Mexico used to have a code of honor where they didn't mess with families with women and children. That is what saved you. These guys still had a little bit of the old code in them. But for most it is not that way now. If you ran into the wrong people you all could have gotten killed. and abused. True, not because it’s legal doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.

Dude, this video could be an instructional on *HOW TO HANDLE* an organized Mexican roadway shakedown. Cartels (those involved in the Mexican *drug* trade) will avoid messing with *American* tourists as they don't want to draw the attention of U.S. law enforcement. But the opposite is true for those targeting "wealthy" (in comparison to the locals) tourists. As someone said long ago, _"We rob banks cuz that's where the money is."_ You *AND YOUR WIFE* handled this brilliantly! Your instincts/experience guided you perfectly.

They don't always avoid it, because they know not much will be done about it. Google 'LeBarón and Langford families massacre'

@@Sercer25 I did as you said. These were not simply "American tourists" as it was an *extended Mexican family* of whom a few had U.S. citizenship and were there to attend a wedding. Americans were not targeted here, and if anything this example shows why it is best to have no ties at all to the local drug trade South of the border, as it is extremely violent.

BTW those are not highways, the highways in Mexico are paid toll highways, those are "carreteras" which means they are sort of like "minor highways" sort of the B roads in the USA. Never use those if possible, always use the toll roads.

Hi Van, Mexican here. You're not supposed to "pass" on countinuos yellow line. Is that not universal to all highways? Anywas, great vid.

That was not a robbery, those were hitmen and it is people who, when they see a car with license plates from another state or foreign, approach with the impression that it is a car from another cartel and it was lucky that they only took 500 pesos from you because they take it from you even the car, suitcases, money, cards, they even take you to an ATM and make you take out as much money as possible and there are occasions when they have killed people after they handed over everything and I assure you that the truck in which they were driving is stolen and at the moment of What they spoke on the radio is to notify those who are further down the road that everything is 10-5 or nothing new with your car and you and that they don't bother you later. It's good that it was only 500 pesos and I'm glad they're here. good you and your family

It may suck, but you did the right thing for the situation. Pulling off just that one bill....yeah, they got what they wanted and you got your family the eff outta there. It might not seem like it, but that was a win.

Not a robbery at gun point. You just needed to pay the cartel toll. that was it.

This week I got introduced to the idea of illegal freedom throught my recommended page on youtube. I found it interesting. I would like to watch you elaborate on that idea through your life experiences. I would find that interesting as well. I enjoy your content, Van. I hope you enjoy making it too.
