The 80s was the era of the flawed hero. Character so broken by the world that they exist in a moral gray area. It just makes them so relatable and so human. I just love how you can literally feel Crockett's rage and sadness. Plus you can hear and feel how vulnerable he is when he calls his ex to see if the only good thing in his life wasn't a lie. Stating the obvious I know but to me that just speaks volumes.

That's because a one hour program in the '80s had 50 minutes of show. A "one hour" program today has 41 minutes. Don Johnson was the man. There were very few actors in that era whose on-screen persona was as cool as his--maybe even only one actor: Mickey Rourke. They made a film together, Harley Davidson and the Marlboro Man. It didn't do so hot at the box office, though, despite both actors providing solid, charismatic performances. They both had really great characters in that film. But, I think the overall story suffered from a lack of vision and a budget to help bring it together. Still, it's a fun film that sort of holds up to this day, simply because of the two leads. But you can just tell. Compared to Blockbuster behemoths released the same year (like Terminator 2) it just didn't stand a chance.

My favorite scene of the series Crockett and Tubbs are rolling through Miami together, Tubbs is loading his shotgun getting ready to roll into battle with Calderone and Crockett has to call his ex wife to find out if his life meant something to somebody. It's the realest scene I've ever seen on tv. I think we all need a Crockett or Tubbs in our lives, someone who has our back no matter what.

I always saw a lot of my dad in this show and there hasn't been anything like this before or since. This series had an emotional gravity that has never been duplicated. Characters searching for justice, validation and redemption. Actors speaking on behalf of the Vietnam generation of doers with Michael Mann using bulky cameras as Go-Pros and Jan Hammer laying down tracks that kill. Epic!

So true. It is what sets Michael Mann apart as a director. The effective use of modern music of the time, the camera work, and the flawed and haunted characters, somehow reminiscent samurai movies of old.

swedishguy83 most definitely one of the best shoot out scenes in a movie ever. It's just so raw. Did u know before they filmed movie the heist actors actually cased out a few banks as if they were going to rob them as prep for the roles. It's also reckoned that people have copied the movie when robbing banks. Life imitating art imitating life 😃

Mann is very good at visuals and music. His scriptwriting can be stilted and in particular emotional relationships and women is pretty poor to awful. Manhunter worked because the relationship with the wife was minimal and mostly unspoken. The best he ever managed was the one between Dollarhyde and the blind woman. Even so, the use of music in the sex scene was awful to the point of proving even Mann isn't perfect with music selection. Heat was just a mess whenever the women were involved with the only strong one being DeNiro's woman, particularly since they didn't talk much and it was a pretty tidy uncomplicated relationship. Collateral again the romance angle was awful. He is at his best when he focuses on the drama of cops and robbers. When he tries to flesh out interpersonal relationship stuff it feels like he doesn't know what real people are like, or how to express it without it being cheesy and cliche. Mann would be better if he collaborated with a writer who could capture the female romance stuff better. Manhunter is the only film I never had a problem with on that front. It was a miracle when you look at his other work.

+Francis Rodrick The "look" Tubbs gives Sonny signifies the empathy Tubbs feels for what must be going through Sonny's mind.Tubbs chooses not to speak on it but rather focus on the business at hand. In that single motion of loading his shotgun , Tubbs states without saying a word that the only people we can and need to trust are right here in this car and in this moment and nothing else matters. The partnership is solidified at that very moment. The production, writing, acting, music, and background shots in this scene set the tone for the series and raised the bar for television series from then on. The best scenes come from what actors do not what they say. Groundbreaking.

I was around 6 or 7 years old when it first came on the air and I always thought the intro was rad but I never watched it because it wasn't a kid's show and it would have been way over my head at the time. Watching this show as an adult now I have to say it's excellent. It has a really great atmosphere and I love how some sequences are just visual with music and very little dialogue. A lot of episodes are essentially 80's noir character vignettes and the show isn't afraid to tell stories where the characters can't be saved and they meet their end as a matter of course. No, the good guys aren't always there to kick in the door and save the day at the last second. And the soundtrack is awesome. So many great contemporary rock and pop songs from the time!

The really heartbreaking part of this episode was the full confrontation between Sonny and Scotty. We not only learn that Scotty was the turncoat, but he explains why. Sonny tries to find a way to empathize, even though he still has to bust his former partner. But, he can't. Empathy for a friend's plight is one thing, but betrayal is betrayal. Especially when the betrayal has gotten multiple people killed. Scotty had to go down for what he did, and Sonny had to be the cop to take him down.
