I picked up my guitar, attempted to play along, put it down two notes later. This talent can only be endowed by the heavens.

My mother wrote this song! I have the original copy and because she sent it into a magazine contest and didn't get a patent, she didn't get any credit!

+Kathy Gatewood If your Mom wrote the song, she wrote a song that stirs the heart and soul of many!!! If this is the case, why didn';t she do something about it in 1978? If she submitted the song to magazine contest, it would be VERY easy to prove that she did so before the song hit #1???????? Is your Mom still with us today? How did\does she feel???? I've seen you post a few times about this and curious....Any which way, you should be very proud of Mom for writing this song and Michael Johnson taking the song to #1...YOUR MOM GETS MY CREDIT AND MANY...MANY OTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@Kathy: Wow, interesting story. Check out MJ's "Dakota Midday" interview here on KZitem to hear him tell the story of how the song came to him. He was surprised it hadn't been grabbed by others before it was offered to him. Maybe it has to do with an unusual origin. BTW, AllMusic.com credits the song to Randy Goodrum, a successful songwriter with several other hits. If your mom really wrote any of it, she should be able to get credit if not royalties. She may have signed away copyright (not "patent"), and thus not be entitled to royalties, but I doubt that transfers credit as a composer. Though unless her copy was notarized (proving date of composition), I suppose authorship would be a "he said/she said" situation.

MJ fully admits that he didnt write this classic. Most performers wont touch mail in music/scripts for just the same reason. I hope your Mom gets what she deserves, but certainly MJ made this song his own with the rare under appreciated world class talents he possessed

With all due respect, Randy Goodrum (the credited songwriter) has built a career writing hits like this one; Randy wrote some of the biggest pop tunes of the 70s/80s/90s. The music is very much in his style, and I'd have a hard time believing he stole it from anyone when he is perfectly capable of sitting down at the piano and knocking it out with his eyes closed. What exactly do you have? A sheet of lyrics? Music?

To Kathy Gatewood, So sad to hear of your mother's misfortune (or missed fortune!) Unfortunately, you should always copyright any lyrics, poem, music etc. before submitting or sharing them to anyone including KZitem & facebook for this reason alone. There are a lot of shady characters in the world that conduct and/or conducted these " talent or poem contests" in order to get free material when they've got "writer's Block"

Kathy Gatewood Your mom wrote one of my favorite songs in the world. If she's still with us, please let her know. One thing that writers have to take away from an experience like getting your song stolen (and then seeing it become a hit) is that, if you can write one hit song, that means that you can write another and another. Also, the poor man's copyright is to take a copy of the lyrics (in your own hand, preferably) and a recording of the song and mail them to yourself by registered letter and NEVER OPEN IT. Tape it up real good so it's obvious that it couldn't have been opened. If you ever take song stealers to court, you can admit that as evidence as to when you wrote it. That held up in court about 10 years ago.
