I remember an interview with Nyman when he explained how the Michael Nyman Band came about. He was asked to do the music for a National Theatre production in the late 60s, and his intention was to get a sound somewhere between that of a rock band and a 'mediaeval street band'. They were called the Campiello Band to begin with, and needed to sound raucous and loud whilst still being 'acoustic'. Saxes gave the impression of old instruments like shawms and curtals. Something like that.
