I also was bought here by that exhibition. I didn't find the exhibition all that interesting, but something about this music piece just hit me as I walked in the room. I hardly moved away from the speakers. There are a number of different versions of this piece though. I don't believe the one in this video is the same as that played in the Met. I've found some other more satisfying versions on spotify so have a look there.

Yrdja Sille in the exhibit they lowered the treble and increased bass a bit, also because the room is like a cathedral, it reverberates.

For anyone visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan this summer (2018) Michael Nyman's emotionally engaging "Time Lapse" music accompaniment is played within the large "Ecclesiastical Heavenly Body" fashion gallery exhibition. This is believed to be the first exhibition of imaginative Catholic religious wardrobe design spanning several decades. Ecclesiastic wardrobes designed by the world's leading fashion house designers are featured. The Metropolitan Museum has, imho, effectively integrated Michael Nyman's "Time Lapse", originally composed a couple decades ago for a feature film, with the "Ecclesiastical" theme of the exhibition. Walking through the gallery with "Time Lapse" playing in the background, combined with the gallery's imaginative lighting and staging was, at least to me, like becoming part of a scene in a Federico Fellini film. The music's emotionally engaging. Like other visitors to the gallery I asked a docent about the title of the background music, some knew and some didn't, and eventually a docent who's a cinema fan provided the title information. All the exhibit needed was a gift shop area with several of Michael's film soundtrack CDs. For myself, at 67, it's a treat to become newly acquainted and learn about a contemporary British composer who's been producing soundtracks for many years. The "Time Lapse" musical theme is simple, basic and direct. And like a J.S. Bach canon, the theme creates an emotionally positive effect when played with one piano all the way up to a symphony orchestration. Variations of the "Time Lapse" composition can found here on KZitem.

I love Michael Nyman. Have for years. But, in the case of Time Lapse, please give some proper credit to Henry Purcell and the composition "What power art thou" (aka "The Cold Song") from his 17th. century opera, King Arthur. Although developed by Nyman, Time Lapse is, initially, nought but a variation upon Purcell's composition and might be credited more to the creative ability of Purcell than of Nyman. If not going that far, Nyman's indebtedness, at least, to the genius of Purcell should be acknowledged and not overlooked.
