Best piece given to me lately was to throw at your target “with purpose.” I’m not a beginner anymore and I am hitting a lot of 5’s and 1’s. Before that advice I would try to make corrections, which, most of the time did not work out. If I hit a 5 my “correction” would have me hitting the 1 instead. The advice of throwing with purpose changed my mind set. If I hit the 5 oh well it happens, I’m not michael smith, just throw with purpose at your target again! I’ve seen my average jump 10 points in the last two months. This game is so mental!

Excellent remark! I'm sick of players on my team throwing two bad darts then the third is just going thru the motion I alaways "EVERY DART COUNTS, OK YOU GOT A ONE, NOW THATS DONE,CANT CHANGE THAT, BUT YOU CAN WITH UR NEXT DART! EVERY DART COUNTS"

Glad I stayed till the end because I was going to comment about the standing behind the line and throwing. I’ve found that when I’m off, it’s usually 1 of 2 things. I’m low because I’m not fully following through and if I just throw from a further distance, it’s a “quick fix” OR for whatever reason, my starting point gets further away from my face causing a longer than normal drawback. After this happening to me every so often, I came up with a phrase “slow back fast forward” that I will say to myself when the darts start going all over the place to get myself to be conscience of it.

Almost 3 years since I started, I STILL don't follow through every single time. It takes 10-15 minutes to start really following through and not trying to channel my inner Johnny Clayton! I try to trick my mind into thinking my target is on the wall, not the board...quite literally trying to throw "through" my target. Darts is a challenging game.

A thing that is never talked about is to have a proper backswing. I just realised that my backswing was very much like Devon Peterson, again he is a great player but he's an exception. Now that I'm trying to have a longer backswing I'm struggling hard at throw straight, but I had to change otherwise I would stay at my current level forever.
@BullshotDarts

Backswing is huge!! I talk about it in a few of my videos, if the backswing is off, your throw will be off. I always recommend a short backswing, the shorter the backswing, the less room for mistakes
@1972vulture

I've gone the opposite way: I try to keep the drawback (not backswing) straight and short, the sweet spot seemingly in the 3-4 centimeter range. Too short and it's a 5, too long it's a 1.

Thank you. I realy struggle with this... Not playing darts that long... but i realy try to follow through... but i find myself falling back to old ways if the game gets close... so many things to focus on in one throw... one moment the 100'/120'/140's and every now and then a 180... and just like that its 2 darts in T1's/T5's/T3's/T7's and 41's/45's/55's/26's , Same on the 19's... Argggggggg !!!

It is a balance, it is important to follow through, but personally i do that naturally so if i focus on having a follow through i often hyper extend the elbow which isnt good. Id recommend just to film yourself and see if you follow through, hyper extend, or snatch
@BullshotDarts
Жыл бұрын
Is it a pain or a soreness? If it’s pain, def stop as you’ll end up hurting yourself, if it’s a soreness, then you just need to do it more to build up your elbow to be used to it, similar to exercising.

It only recently clicked with me while listening to Rick Monday doing a Dodgers broadcast. He said, "You can't think about hitting while you're at the plate". Now I focus on making the motion as smooth, effortless and MINDLESS as possible. Since we're not robots, every throw is gonna be slightly different. I'm just trying to let the muscle memory kick in and then let my unconscious mind make the calculation in the process of a smooth, languid throw. I guess I'm just trusting my "feel" rather than intellectualizing an event that takes a fraction of a second to execute. Not gonna lie tho, it's taken a loooong time. My accuracy has improved as a result.

Wrong. Don't ever point at your target. Worst bit if misinformation taken from Phil Taylor on a TV show. He was actually stating that your follow through is Important. If your making a conscious decision to stop your follow through to point at your target your not following through. Relax the hand let it fall through naturally. That is called your personal handprint. Don't ever stop your follow through to "point at your target" Look at any professional darts player, their hand will always fall past what they should be pointing at and usually somewhere off the board 😂 Garry anderson, Phil Taylor even luke littler... Best bit of advice I can give anyone is make sure your throwing inline and straight 👌 The throw is straight, the darts usually will go straight... You kick your elbow out or stand slightly wrong and make the throw not centered and then everything is off and the dart won't fly true 👌👏👏👏
@BullshotDarts
7 ай бұрын
That’s good advice too. But pointing at your target doesn’t mean you stop your follow through. I would argue most players do point, but it’s not like a literal stand and point at it, it’s all part of the full follow through motion

No pro's point at what they are aiming at. You release your dart between your eye and what you are aiming at. Try it, you'll see what I mean.
@BullshotDarts
Жыл бұрын
I agree with the release part. And as for the pointing, I use the word point because for players struggling with a follow through, it will force them to fully follow through towards their target. And I was exaggerating my “point” to show. Pros don’t strike a pose pointing, they usually have very fluid motions where you don’t see it And like I always say, to each their own, give it a shot, if it works it works, if it doesn’t, don’t do it

Sorry sir, but you have no idea what you're talking about. "Today we're gonna concentrate on destroying our elbows". A follow through in darts has absolutely nothing to do with your arm. It is 100% from the fingers, then the wrist, and then the arm should just go with your wrist and fall into place at shoulder hight. You are going to do yourself an injury if you listen to this advice.
