Here is the Michipicoten making a sunrise arrival in Superior, Wisconsin on April 22, 2024. She was arriving empty to load iron ore pellets (taconite) from the Burlington Northern #5 dock. The taconite was scheduled for delivery to the Algoma Steel mill in Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, a 26-hour trip by lake freighter to the other side of Lake Superior. So far in 2024, the Michipicoten has been alternating between loading iron ore at Superior, Two Harbors... with Two Harbors being her most frequent port of call.
Sunrises over Lake Superior are often spectacular to witness, especially when there is the right amount clouds to diffuse the light slightly and create a colorful glow in the sky. Fortunately this was one of those mornings. In particular, the sky had a strong orange hue to it, especially before the Michipicoten reached the Wisconsin Point lighthouse. We've heard the saying that sailors take warning when there is a red sky at morning, but what do they do when there's an orange sky? I guess they pound down a glass of orange juice at breakfast and get to work!
If you watch to the end, you'll see a crew member ride the bosun's chair down to the dock to help tie up the ship. I've featured this in other videos in Superior, but I know not everyone sees it because KZitem statistics tell me that most people don't watch until the end. But then again, most people don't read the video descriptions either! If you're one of those who watch until the end and/or read the video descriptions, I send you a sincere THANK YOU.
The 698-foot Michipicoten was launched in 1952, originally named the Elton Hoyt 2nd. She sailed for Interlake Steamship Company until she was laid up in 2001 due to lack of demand. She was then purchased by Lower Lakes Towing in 2003 and renamed the Michipicoten before starting work with her new owners. All of the Lower Lakes Towing ship are named after rivers. (Her fleet-mates include the Mississagi, Cuyahoga, and Saginaw... though the Mississagi was retired at the conclusion of the 2020 season and was scrapped.) In 2010, her steam turbine was replaced with a 6-cylinder 8,200 horsepower diesel engine. Her current cargo capacity is 22,000 tons.
