My bet for the NPU vs GPU thing is that it saves a lot of battery when you consider that the NPU is likely to run all the time with the Recall feature. The Recall feature (and others) likely doesn't need more than what these new NPUs provide, so the GPU's extra perf wouldn't do anything positive. The very act of turning the GPU on likely consumes more power than the NPU running. Look at Intel's latest chips where they have a new LP E core and other feature on a dedicated tile even though those features would traditionally be contained within the CPU, GPU, or some other part. Its for the power savings.
@theworddoner

The issue is a cost of an NPU vs GPU atm. Money and energy wise. Remember GPU's are decades matured tech while NPU's aren't a decade old. So software developers are moving to an incoming tech as GPU's are hitting power and heat limits (and being dominated by one company.)

So this is Windows on ARM? I'd be interested to know what emulation/translation for x86 programs they offer. Also what is legally allowed to speed up x86 instructions running on an ARM. Apple is doing something. Although I imagine we are only going to see real improvement if something like Proton takes on the CPU as well, like Valve releasing a Steam Deck 4 on an ARM CPU. Edit: LOL Prism. Interesting.

I mean, what percentage of laptop sold are without a GPU? Think about all the Chromebooks purchased by school systems around the US that are GPU-less. The AI (neural network) revolution is only a year old. Based on its adoption rate over that short span of time, why would someone be surprised that silicon and software are swarming to keep up?
