Excellent ideas on how to use variable electricity supply to maximum effect, and very much worth the 25p because on a climate scale that 25p is worth more than £25 spent polluting the place. The concept of using the whole country to store excess energy could be a game changer. Tom also brings home the imbalance found in a high cost excess waste scenario, so some restructuring of what we already have can make a significant difference. As individuals we can just choose to do this. Well done Tom.

Thank you Tom, for a most interesting presentation. I was with Bulb but following their demise Octopus has become my energy provider. I have an electric car, an MG5 and an Ohme Home Pro charger but unfortunately the MG5 isn't covered in the charging scheme; have been in touch with Octopus but so far no result! As to the Agile tariff, following your informatioin in this video I will explore it and find out if it will suit my wife's and my needs - we are both retired and can be flexibe in the usage of power.

The Ohme Home Pro is compatible with Intelligent, the make of the car is irrelevant.

So how much will electricity cost if there is no fuel burnt to generate it? What do you think?

I think the social destruction of all the mining towns because the Green Party wanted to go green was bad.Towns that bounced Social clubs pubs no charity shops because if you wanted to work the Pit was there, if you go these places dead the clubs gone the shops gone charity shops and bookies plenty off. They didn’t think it thru I worked in a lot of these places it is pityfull. China, India and Germany coal fired power stations.Bring back coal I worked on Drax and fiddlers ferry thay can clean the fumes coming out technologies are on it 24/7.This is the big picture we have plenty coal, bring it in from Australia and China that makes no sense. Keep up the good work but remember Barnsley and Ashington dead towns now Concett Steel town all gone.

I’m not sure what you mean, the Green Party has had no power in the UK, ever. The coal industry was put on its knees by a conservative government, who did nothing to help transition jobs that were lost But we can’t keep using coal to generate electricity. It’s expensive and it’s CO2 emissions are very high. We have cleaner and cheaper alternatives now so we shouldn’t go back. The Chinese are building more renewable electricity than most of the rest of the world combined. I live in County Durham so I know all about the impact on old mining towns, but low carbon technology is an opportunity for places like this, not responsible for them struggling.

I think it will probably go up. Even if it does go down your standing charge will definitely go up.

Yes I think we will have a solid standing charge on bills for the foreseeable future. But think electricity costs could come down, particularly if some of the non-commodity costs on electricity are taken away, or moved to gas... But then, I am not sure how we would price electricity if there is minimal fuel being used.... renewables are definitely going to be disruptive to energy markets Tom

I'm with Octopus and thinking of changing to the agile tariff. The price can go up as well as down (octopus say up to 300%) so I'm wondering if you have rough figures on the ratio of more expensive/less expensive times and costs and how it pans out over time compared to more traditional tariffs. Thanks

Hi Clive, sorry for the delay in coming back, agile has certainly varied a lot over the last couple of years, and particularly with the energy crisis. I know the website energy-stats.uk/ has some good detail on how agile (and other octopus tariffs) varies. I also use the ‘octopus watch’ app that helps track prices and savings. Over the last week my daily average rate has varied between 8p and 22p… so big swing!
