People were harsh on Manny for literally no reason. There was zero evidence that he did anything wrong, and he wasn't even really bashing the girl who quit on him. He was just pretty rightfully surprised and a bit confused, which given the fact that his assistant he got along with just decided she was done out of no where, I'd say is pretty valid. As for the "two weeks" thing, I think it depends. Firstly, if you've been treated right and don't hold anything against your boss, then its the polite thing to do. Esspecially if you work for a small business as opposed to some big cooperation. Of course, if you're being mistreated, obviously leave. In addition to that, just be sure that it won't bite you in the ass later, like be sure you won't need to try and go back to your old job.

It sucks, honestly. I was happy for her, wished her well, and the kids & I put a gift & card together for her - but at the same time it's not a good feeling when someone quits on you. Agreed! I thought his frustration/confusion to the situation was just that - frustrating and confusing. I think anyone would be annoyed to have to train and get someone situated just to have them basically leave abruptly right after. Not every employer is terrible, and maybe the employee just didn't want to deal with the back and forth of telling Manny, so just kept it as cold-cut as possible. I feel like Manny probably just really liked her and maybe thought they clicked well, and when she left abruptly, he may have been more hurt/offended more than anything.

The 2 weeks notice isn't required unless in some form of contract signed. Giving 2 weeks though is to ensure you do not burn a bridge. I worked at a place where a new hire came in on Monday and left Wednesday because another job they applied to came back with a better offer.

Yes exactly, like if you worked there long and wanna leave on good terms, use them as a reference & especially if you know that they will need to find someone else to replace you.. my daughter gave like 2 MONTH notice at both her old farm jobs, but she worked there quite a while and didn’t even have anyone there to cover her shifts for a day off, never mind for her to just up & quit (since it would be the animals there suffering from her absence the most!), And she just found a way better farm job & works part time at one of her old ones again

It's crazy that in US they just let employees go without any notice. In my country, the notice period applies to both the employee and the company. It usually ranges between 2 weeks to 3 months depending on your position in the company and how long you've been working for them. If for example you would wish to shorten your notice, this would have to be discussed and agreed on with your employer. Same for them, however that's a very rare case. The only instance where the company would let go of you without a notice period, is if you were a direct threat to the company or fellow colleagues or leadership members (leaking sensitive information, harassment etc.) US really needs to get their shit together.
@aSnRainbow

Exactly! Here it's in the law to give your notice 1 month before and it applies to both parties. (Of course there are exemptions) And with fixed contracts the employer even needs to take into account how many years the employee has been working. For the 2 weeks thing, I think it's considerate and unless you are starting your job ASAP, you should give as much notice as you can, especially if it's a shift type job that they would need to find coverage for. Now, if your managers/work are super toxic, then screw them and run, they don't deserve it - but if that's not really the case, like it is just you getting your dream job/a better fitting job, then give your 2 weeks. Especially as you never know what future employer may reach out to past places you worked at (with or without your knowledge). I think for the assistant situation with Manny, unless he was truly awful, they should've given him more of a heads up. And maybe they told him early on that they would be applying to other jobs while working for him (he obviously knew and understood this was their dream job). But I think it's weird they just sent an email a couple hours before they would be there, rather than the day before and not a text/call with it.

If you don't want to work for a person and worry that much that your work ethic will get you fired out of nowhere than perhaps you should go find stability working for yourself.

@jatarra I was an assistant for a Salon. The other assistants and I were suppose to share clients. In my book there was nothing for two months. The other assistant was fully booked for the next two weeks. I quit the next day. Since then I have worked for many talent agencies, film sets , been in magazines and worked on NYFW for a few years . I earned many great references. I give my hard work and respect to people who respect my talent and time. I leave when they don't. It's rough economy. Lots of people stay in shitty jobs that will get rid of them the minute it benfits the employer . Why be a sheep in a room full of wolves?

Two weeks is a thing. The reason people can get fired without notice or severance is because they arent in a union. My sister is a store clerk and her co-workers get two weeks, because theyre union workers. Also in some companies if you quit without notice you can be held legally accountable for any money lost due to your unexpected departure. People defending the assistant are kinda crazy ngl, like if you think workers shouldnt be treated as disposable there are ways to fix that lol

While I totally get not wanting to give a 2 week notice at a job where the employer treats you badly I think it's a bit reductive for people to attack Manny over asking for some advance notice. She probably didnt feel the need to because she only worked a month so far and it's always seen as a bad idea to bring up that you were job searching while working. So I understand both sides' concerns. I'd at least have put in a notification the day I got the offer letter and signed it though. A small courtesy like that keeps bridges from being burned imo if you are going beyond entry level

Maybe I’m old school but, if I was leaving a company on my terms I would give two weeks notice. Especially if I am putting a lot of time and effort into a job. Obviously if you are fired you aren’t going to get the same courtesy, you are being fired, MORE THAN LIKELY (not always) for something you did wrong. I have heard of some places just saying okay go ahead and go. Who knows if I might want to go back to said company eventually 🤷🏼♀️

Um the reason you’d give two weeks notice to a company for you quitting is so they can make preparations for you leaving. Quite frankly, I don’t care how quick the firing process is. Why do companies deserve that respect of a two week notice, if employees don’t deserve the respect of being given time to prepare before they lose what’s likely their main source of income, and therefore their livelihood? That’s ridiculous.

If we receive a background check from your next employer, we just confirm that you worked with us for this position from this date to that date. How you resigned and what bad records you have are tagged confidential. We do not hold a personal vendetta against you. Once you're out, we're just here to push papers. I feel like a 2 week notice is necessary because it’s not the same thing. The reason an employer does not give a 2 week notice is because, if someone is fired It is actually unsafe to keep employees onboarded, the environment can become hostile, people might steal things or there temper and attitude can become erratic and they might do something to damage the company image, people can become very bitter and vindictive. So I completely understand employers not giving a 2 week notice when letting someone go, because everyone’s first thought is “F it, I’m being fired anyways so, who cares.”

On Manny’s video it helps all of us realize that we cannot hold high expectations of people who don’t hold it for themselves. When the responses from so many are all about their personal hurt feelings about their business issues, then we have to realize that we can’t expect those who don’t know or care about doing better to maintain adherence to professional behaviors. You need to now be far more discerning about who you hire. But we are all learning how to handle the emotional and mental imbalance and drama of others. Social media is a WONDERFUL tool to help us see how real and intense that mental instability is. 😂😂😂

“They don’t give you two weeks notice when they fire you” is so dumb. You’re usually fired because you’re not needed anymore or because you’ve done something wrong. When you’re leaving a job, you give a two weeks to set your employer up for an easy transition. It’s just the right thing to do. You really want to screw over every single person you work with because you just didn’t feel like giving a notice? Most employers won’t even have you work out your two weeks. Talk to them, but to just leave is immature and irresponsible

As someone who’s worked for 7 years in various industries, 2 weeks notice is very much a thing. Its an issue for a company to have a trained staff member choose to leave before a scheduled shift. I believe this means you can loose access to your built up in holiday pay. When fired, you’re still given access to your holiday pay, as long as you have not caused damages to the company. Every contract is different, but Ive seen people who leave without notice get heavily punished. I left instantly from a job, but I was given permission by my boss before doing so.

In Europe, 2 MONTHS notice is pretty common. If you announce you're quitting, you need to keep working for 2 months and when a company lets you go you need to keep working for 2 months. Only when you a fired (ie dismissed for wrongdoing like theft, fraud, etc) are you not required to ever return. A lot of people seem to get 'fired' and 'let go' confused, cuz 'fired' implies that you did something wrong and were dismissed with immediate effect, but how often do people experience that? So to say you don't need to give notice cuz companies fire people immediately seems like a weird comparison. Also to not give a company notice because some other companies might be shitty seems pretty dumb...

Good life advice, even if you hate your job, always give 2 week notice. A few years ago my boyfriend got hired at Fedex Office, he was there a few months but the manager was a BITCH (micromanager, always criticized when he went above and beyond to help his coworkers, etc) and he just couldn’t stand her anymore. He quit with no notice. Side note- the manager had been there 10 years. Well, a few months later we found out she got fired. The new manager was my boyfriend’s old co-worker and had said he would have rehired him but couldn’t because he didn’t give a 2 week notice when he quit, and is now considered to be “un-hireable” at Fedex. Fast forward a few years, he wanted to try being a delivery worker during the summer but now that won’t happen. So summary, try and give notice because you just never know. Also, you ruin your chance at listing them as a reference in future applications.

Chick-fil-a does the same thing. Whether people want to believe it or not, having CFA on your resume makes jobs interested in you because of the customer service experience. But CFA is fairly strict and uphold standards. If you don't put in your 2 weeks notice when quitting, depending on the Operator of that store, they can put you in the system for being "unreliable" and you won't work at another CFA again. That being said, it's not a very common thing but it CAN happen.

If it’s a big business I don’t care about the 2 weeks notice like Wendy’s for example because in my experience those next 2 weeks they’re gonna treat you like trash and make you as miserable as possible. However with an assistant job it probably did put him in a tough place, if he hired an assistant it’s because he needed one. So if he had a hectic week planned and she just out of no where surprised him with it then yeah I can see why he’s stressed out. He wasn’t even mean about it, he didn’t say anything bad about her just that he was upset about the situation she put him in.

In regards to two weeks, my personal mindset mirrors what a lot of people have said in the video: If you like your job and/or want to use them as a reference, feel free to give a two week. If its a job where you don't plan on using as a reference/they were just terrible to you, nah, because as others have said: jobs don't give us two week notices, so we aren't beholden to give them two week notices in return. It is a courtesy. I'd say just use your best judgement in if you like them enough. I understand some people prefer to give two weeks for every job, some prefer to give them for no jobs. Everyone is different and that's fine. We all work and live how we feel best. This is just my take.

For the Manny situation I didnt think it was cause for backlash. I think he was just genuinely confused and wanted to know, like is this a thing or did we throw it out, let me know in the comments guys. Also two weeks to my knowledge is still a thing if you want to keep that bridge or if you just want to respect your employers time (if they were a good employer). On the spot quitting has always been a thing. I dont know why its suddenly the end of two weeks notice? Plus she had a literal reason why she quit so abruptly -the job wanted her right away. Ive been in that position before and had to let my employer know unfortunately I dont have the time to give two weeks if I want this job. I have a relative who quit a high level desk job and she willingly gave a months notice just so they have the appropriate time to find a replacement but moreso for her to finish up all her projects so she doesnt burden anyone, but she had the time to give a month bc shes taking time off after. Had she been on a time constraint she might not be able to give that month notice
