To this day mike talks about the regret he has doing this interview

This is without question the lowpoint in the entire 19 year history that was Mike and the Mad Dog. It is a classic case of what happens when you have sports hosts losing all sense of perspective for the sake of justifying five hours of air time. And in Russo's case, the way he was carrying on an idiotic grudge against Lidle prior to this interview was even more shameful. I really wish we had the program from the day Lidle was killed or just afterwards to hear what they said and if on-air they did any real self-reflection of the lines they crossed in this "interview".

@@dp-ec9vb The beat-down on Lidle *before* he called was ridiculous. And in Russo's case, he held a whiny grudge against Lidle going back long before that call ever took place. If his death the next day can't bring the whole element of *perspective* back that was totally lacking in Francesa and Russo on this day, then that I think says it all.

Lidle, regardless of how he tried to excuse himself here, was spouting off to the papers and seemingly taking a veiled shot at Torre, despite the fact that he was only there for a cup of coffee and had zero cache in the clubhouse. That also meant he had no skin in the game, as his short tenure meant that he was shielded from being blamed for the very unpreparedness he referred to. It was a terrible look and these guys were simply doing their jobs by calling him out on it. Nobody could have anticipated what would happen to Lidle; NY sports media is a circus, one Lidle willingly stepped into when he gave those quotes and then called into the show. Did Esteban Loaiza spout off after the 2004 loss? No, because he was a midsession pickup who didn’t even make the rotation. That’s basically the exact equivalent here

@@TheLocalLt I'm not saying Lidle was perfect, but let's be honest. Russo had it in for him long before that because Lidle had said negative things about Barry Bonds. Russo was not "doing his job" he was zeroing in on Lidle specifically because of his past grudges and if anyone other than Lidle had made those comments, Russo would have let it slide or wouldn't have acted the way he did. Of course I'd note that Torre didn't exactly distinguish himself in terms of how he managed that playoff series (Indeed, you can find a LOT of bad moves Torre made in the postseason in 2004-07).

@@epaddonmaybe Lidle shouldn’t have spouted his mouth off about The team when he was a nobody! Russo was doing his job so was Mike! Lidle deserved what he got in this interview! I feel awful about what happened to him nobody could’ve predicted that. But don’t act like Lidle wasn’t in the wrong by making those quotes and then being stupid enough to call into the show!

@@casmierekelly389 The team did not distinguish itself in that LDS, nor did Torre. Let's have some honesty about that. But if Russo doesn't have the pre-existing grudge hate he had against Lidle going back long before that playoff series, he doesn't make a big deal about it. This was Russo the SF Giants fan (I have never had any respect for those who root for a team in a city they never lived in or had some tie to. Indeed, WFAN NEVER had a true Yankee fan with the same passion for the Yankees that all their Met fan hosts and update men and anti-Yankee fans have had. Francesa doesn't count because he was a Mantle era fan who never had the same passion for the Yankee teams that came after that.) looking for an excuse to vent hate at Lidle because of Barry Bonds. Denying that element is being totally dishonest.

Cory Lidle R.I.P., threw Joe Torre under the bus, end of story. When you state "we were not ready to play," that is, has, and always will be a veiled shot at the manager/head coach. Lidle tried to weasel his way out of what he said, and Russo and Francesa wouldn't let him get away with it. Good for them.

That is a crock. Russo went after Lidle because he already carried a grudge against him because Lidle had made some remarks about Bonds and steroids, and then Russo lost his marbles when he interviewed Cashman on the day Lidle was acquired. If you think Russo would have acted the same way with ANY other player who made similar comments, you're being naive. But even if it was a shot at Torre, I think it can be safely said that Torre didn't exactly distinguish himself in postseason managing from 2004-07.
