Doesn’t help that the band has a history of either firing members at weird times (Derek Sherinian was fired to get Jordan Rudess). If Mangini didn't see this coming, that means he's an arrogant prick. He thought he was the Grammy guy in DT. Turns out, he was mistaken. I personally ignored DT after Portnoy left. They may as well have just used a drum machine. Too much emphasis on technique and complexity. Like AI or robotics. No soul. DT needed their soul back. Hence, MP's return. John Petrucci tried to run it like Rush. That didn't work. Why? Because their not Rush. People expect different set lists at different shows. That's what DT did until MP left. Because that was MP's doing (He is a Zappa fan, after all). I can't wait to see them live again. As it should be, with Mike Portnoy holding it all down.

@@beefcake0354 @morsecode2112 saying he was at all fooling himself would be fundamentally misunderstanding Mike as a person. He was always clear that he was there to fill the role until whenever something like this happened. The thing is, when you make transitions like this, you don't just randomly cut a person off, you communicate. Which is the reason why he was blindsided to begin with. He obviously knew that things could change on a dime, but when you make decisions like this the right thing to do is to actually talk about it not abruptly kick someone out and ghost them. It's like shutting out your current boyfriend while you go fuck your ex, and not even bothering to tell him your relationship's done even when, by all accounts, you've gone long enough that you should be married. That's not being a good band, or a good person. That's not how you conduct yourself as a professional.

@morsecode2112 - The lengths you guys will go to, to hate on Mangini is insane. You literally created a scenario - IN YOUR HEAD - that is 100% pore conjecture. You admit that you've ignored them since crybaby left, which means you didn't give it a fair listen, which makes your opinion absolute bullsbut. I did listen, to the recorded material, and the live material, covering Portnoy's era. Mangini is much more of a musical player. He hits all the "joints", while filling in a way that doesn't obscure the band. He let's the music dictate. Portnoy plays the same old shit he's done since he arrived, and he was better back then. He peaked on Awake. It's "shallow" and boring ever since.

There's going to be issues and LaBrie can't sing anymore anyway and JP's writing swings between Disney and mature very often now- so I dunno if this is much of an issue for most people who were fans 20 or 30 years ago. Mangini is a gentelman certainly and he is no doubt one of the greatest drummers ever. This said, DT, as a number of other iconic and everlasting Bands (with capital letter) was the result of the perfect blend of two genius musicians, composers and instrumentalists (as rhe Beatles, Pink Floyd or Supertramp to quote a few), Mike Protnoy and John Petrucci. They are the essence of DT, to which a third genius joined later on. It was obvious an desirable for music and musicians that Portnoy would come back. Mangini has been a perfect replacement but he is not a composer. Albums without Portnoy have never been as good as those before (leaving the Grammy aside, which is welcome commercially, but musically itrelevant). They were not bas, but no masterpieces anymore. Now the real DT is back. Salute Portnoy. Thanks a lot Mangini.

And they replaced him with Kenny Jones. It was not the same. It changed the whole dynamic of The Who. I believe it was the same with these guys. They just did not get the total love that they did with Portnoy. And that can turn into lost revenue and popularity. Just my own thoughts. Portnoy should have never been fired in the first place. Mangini seems to be a class act. The only member that needs to be replaced is the vocalist.... seriously, they need a world class vocalist, not a guy that today can sing good and tomorrow be fighting to hit the notes.

he wasnt fired, he chose to leave, he regretted it within a week and asked to join back but the band said no and moved on as they were heartbroken. 🙂

He knew from the start that if Portnoy wants back in he will be out. So he took the ride and made most of it. Could be worse-ask Jay Weinberg or any other living ex member of the Corey Taylor Band formerly known as Slipknot.

I knew about dream Theater when they were Majesty always loved MP playing but i knew when MM joined he would take the band up a notch or 2 which he did, but i also knew in the back of my mind with the 40th Anniversary coming MP would want to come back and he did, and now Since they won a Grammy and now are much more popular than ever before, it was time to do a reunion for 2024 and push for a New album which I can almost guarantee will be more gritty rock and roll because no offence but MP cant take the band any higher in the prog range.

It's obviously a shitty situation for Mangini, but given the bands history it comes at no surprise. He may never understand why he was fired, but he should be proud of the work he's done with DT. Stuff like this happens in the music business all the time because it's just that, business.

Mangini was a powerhouse for DT. I much prefer him with the band. Mangini is a top-class guy, and I must say that Portnoy was classy as well, stating credit to Mangini. They are friends, and with the attitudes they both have for one another, that friendship will last.

Love Mike M, and glad Mike P is back it's not either or but both. But....what would advance notice look like? A certified letter? FedEx? I mean, nobody had advance notice things happen in real time for everybody. I really hope Mike M forms/joins a band and continues to share his superstar playing with us. I also can't remember anticipating an album release in a very long time like I am #16. I feel young again.

His professional response are enough for me, but I don't like when people pissing off thinking he got booted off crazily. He wasn't left at the bus stop when Portnoy returned. He knew the circumstances of the band and understand it.

I will never not think that Mangini got done dirty. Maybe we will never know the true no-BS story behind this but I hope someday that we do. MM is a class act and will always be. MP, IMHO, has a controlling ego. This is tough for me because I've been a fan since '96 but I've only seen MM in concert with them. After briefly meeting Mike at a couple of DT meet & greets it'd be kinda hard to see DT without him. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it goes with the new album and tour, but the new album better not goddamnn be full of MP songs about his personal problems. We've seen enough of that. And I wonder if MP can perform "The Alien"....

All this mess is Petrucci's creation, the second I read Portnoy over-praising the 2nd album of Petrucci (And I still believe it sucks compared to Suspended Animation) I remember telling a dear friend of mine : Mark my words, they are gonna sack Mangini sooner or later ! And this situation increased after releasing the (unsuccessful) LTE 3

I remember Petrucci saying it was a “forever” thing, in the video documenting the auditions. Things change, I’m sure he’s grateful for the opportunity, but Dream Theater is a business enterprise. I’ll always remember Mike P as the dude who left and tried to come back a couple months later after he realized how bad a decision that was.

I am very disappointed in the way DT handled this. Especially in the way they all complained about how Portnoy dropped the "bomb" in their laps that he was leaving. And how heartbroken and upset they were etc.. They hire Mangini who literally came in and saved DT, just for them to give Mangini the same treatment Portnoy gave them years ago.. Not that excited about DT anymore.. Think it was very dirty.. I lost a lot of respect for them with the way the did it. Now, I get it Mangini doesn't fit, he's way to professional, humble and good of a human being to be in that band.
