Yes, the "full sized" bar was a standard 8 oz. bar as opposed to the 6 oz bar we get today. Also Emmy messed with the swirl too much. She was digging deep in the batter. The whole point to the bundt pan was to get "tunnel" cakes with contrasting flavors. Which meant that the "heavier" batter was to lie on top of the "lighter" batter in order to sink into the center.
@denisel4439

The bars, also, used to have less caramel and more nougat. Back in the 70's, I used to make a jelly roll pan version of a milky way cake. It called for 8 milky way bars in the cake part. It was sooo good! I tried making the cake a few years ago, with the new bars, and it was awful. Waaay too much caramel. I haven't made it since. ☹

Looks yuumy, BUT, I would've doubled the milky way bars to 4, then poured half the cake batter into bundt, added half of milky way mixture and swirled, then repeated. You'd get more swirl and more of the milky way flavor. Finish as directed... perhaps 3 bars instead of 2, for more even coverage and flavor.

Omg! This was one of the first cakes I ever made on my own! I remember I made an Italian meatloaf (which was really good), garlic mashed potatoes, cheese sticks and this cake. I was in 9th grade. The meatloaf was ok. The cake was delicious. I burnt the cheese sticks and the mashed potatoes were TERRIBLE because I didn’t know the difference between a clove and head of garlic. So instead of 3 cloves, I put 4 heads. They were completely disgusting lol Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Jemima1377 Cake decorator here - She cut off the bottom of the cake because it domed up while in the oven and if she plopped it out of the bundt pan as is it would not sit level on her platter and look nice and professional. We always take the top cake cuttings and mix them with leftover frosting to make Dumpster Cake for the kids! Also, even though her cake top was not over baked, often when larger cakes are being baked, it takes much longer for the center to become done than the top or the sides. By the time the middle is the perfect consistency, the domed top and side edges are a tad dark and dry, so bakers will level the top and carve down the sides so everything is the same perfect consistency all the way through. I do agree with Gene Waddle, however, about the glaze! I am a fan of a thick coat of glaze or icing on bundt cakes!! And I would have used half & half or cream instead of water with the candy bars. 😋

I found a somewhat similar cake recipe in one of my mom’s cook books once, when I was a kid... I couldn’t read very well yet so I just looked at the pictures and deduced it was perfectly fine to just stick flour, baking soda, half a bag of sugar (it’s sold in one-kilo, or approx. two-pound, bags) and a handful of candy bars into a cake pan and stick it in the oven. I don’t remember tasting it, but I do remember my mom being super pissed for me ruining her favorite cake pan... and that it took me quite a while to clean the oven.

Hey Emmy, this is a recipe i found with my grandmama back in the early mid 70s. The only diference in ours was that for the swirl you melted 6 candy bars in butter and then swirled it in the batter. It makes for a much heavier swirl .. Some people also just take the candy bars and insert them directly into the batter and bake it that way.. I am sure it would work. But it was great seeing someone else use this recipe. There is one you might want to look for its called a Vanilla waffer cake and its very dense and waxy but amazing in flavor. If i remember correctly you use vanilla ice cream for the liquid ingredients and you can imagine the intensity of vanilla ;).. see if you can find it.thanks for the videos. LOVE THEM :)

For a “retro” recipe, this actually looks and sounds good, considering a lot of the retro recipes tend to be sketchy at best. lol I make a bundt cake around the holidays that uses a boxed spice cake mix with coarsely diced green apples in the mixture and has a caramel glaze. It’s really good but the glaze is quickly absorbed into the cake once you drizzle it on. So you have to wait and drizzle it on each slice of cake as you plate and serve it up. I wonder if this Milky Way glaze would work better. Although I’d use a vanilla boxed cake mix instead of the spice cake and I’d omit the apples. Thanks for an awesome video, Emmy! ❤️

A suggestion when working with swirls - put half the batter in the pan then layer your swirl then put the remaining batter on top - then swirl with a knife or chopstick. This will usually keep the swirl more toward the middle of the cake and it may not settle too much to the bottom.

I have never seen someone cut the bottom of a bundt cake, that surprised me and made me laugh! It is perfectly normal/acceptable for them to have a slightly domed bottom, and way easier! This looks yummy.

Yes I said tomato soup cake for ever. My grandfather used to make it with cream cheese icing. Very good.
