Just ran the DeWalt version for the first time today. I actually like the bar-end guard. Tossed an old 2 AH battery on it while the 3 AH it came with was charging. It powered through a pile of live and dead brush/limbs I had piled up on my burn pit since early spring. about 4" diameter hardwood(Pin Oak) was the biggest I went through. Nothing bogged it down and the battery fared very well. I love its longer bar length and the hook on that guard is awesome for hooking an upward cut and keeping the chain out of the dirt. I bought it because I already have DeWalt batteries and after watching this I think I made the right choice. Weight wise, I think it would be comfortable with even the chunky 5 AH batteries. Nice video!

I just picked up the m18 milwaukee. I freaking love it. I have a nice Echo gas chain saw but honestly... around the yard type stuff I can't get over how much I love the milwaukee... it's quiet, powerful, and fast. VERY easy to use and the auto oiler is KEY for me. I've had other saws where you have to oil the chain after so many uses and you don't realize how much time is wasted by doing that... Love the milwaukee! I enjoy gas powered tools but I feel like I'm slowly adapting to the battery powered ones and the sheer quietness of them is such a plus... and my neighbors aren't bitching about the noise..lol

I have Stihl and think manual oiling is great as the tool does not have oi on it anywhere. I did however notice that some people on YT oil it way too excessively. I use 3-4 drops after each battery charge, even though it can be oiled even less frequently.

Thanks for the great review! I keep the M18 in my vehicle for use when I go off road. I have a 12" bar and chain that I can swap to cut a larger limb or tree crossing the road. I already have Milwaukee batteries and charger, so I was able to just buy the bare tool for $245.
@k.squared

I've got the Stihl one. Not anything special, but it lasts much longer than you indicated. Simply if you cut logs almost without stopping, the battery overheats very quickly and starts acting flat. Then you wait a bit and can get another that until it overheats again, after which you again wait a bit and get another that until it actually goes flat. So it can easily overheat at least three (often more) times faster than it actually discharges. But yeah, it is also very dependent on the condition of the chain and the type of wood. If you're cutting dry soft sticks, it does not overheat at all. BTW, I love it that it is oiled manually. Just a few drops after each charge. I haven't used the included bottle in two years.

Thanks for including all the major brands and a handsaw. Excellent tests. The fact that the handsaw outperformed most of these toys says enough. As a professional arborist I disapprove of the performance of stihl and husqvarna in these tests. Makita performed mediocre and I would still stick to a handsaw or a fuel driven chainsaw for serious work. I approve of the milwaukee.

Quite a surprise for German tools, where it freezes more than here in the UK.

It's not so much the hassle of manual oiling that killed the others for me, it's the lack of information. Eg how well do i have to oil it, how often, what happens if i don't, what purpose does the oil serve, etc? I've done a fair bit of digging around and found next to nothing. Husqvarna have a quick video showing someone casually dabbing a few arbitrary blobs of oil around, and that's it. I'm not sure what purpose that serves, if anything. It doesn't look like it's penetrating enough to make much difference where most of the friction happens which i assume is with the bar, but that's the problem it's all a complete guess. Doesn't say anything about how often, or the different environments it's likely to get used in. Apparently a badly oiled chain can snap? And that would be really dangerous? I'm going to have to spend the extra on one with built in oiling because at least i know it works properly. Because with manual oiling, i don't know if i'm doing it right, if i'm doing it often enough, and what the impact is if i get it wrong.

Depending on what you are doing a Silky saw for small/medium wood very adaptable about £60/70 for a top job Zubat or £30 F180 folding saw, will last for years if used to manufactures guidelines. The folder will do 80-90% of most people’s requirements. The Zubat more of a pro tool. I have both and you can appreciate the quality compared to other copies. Perhaps a decent set of loppers too. If you are going for firewood or half a lot to do a Stihl or Husqy chainsaw with a decent maintained chain.

High prices in U.K. , Makita Australia doesn't show that DUC101 model as yet , only a couple of 12v versions but for my money I'd go for the 4.5" top handle 18v DUC122 which retails for $419 aud / £213 gbp which is for the kit , I already have some 18v Makita gear so I'd just get the skin for $265 / £135 . The Husky shown here looks good value for money and was quite impressive in the wood for runtime , if I was in the market that would be on my short list for sure .

For the price of the Milwaukee, I can get a stihl 170 and 024 and plenty of change for oil and petrol....... I've used chainsaws for 30 years. I have one battery operated saw, and it's fine for pruning, nothing else. Once you cut too big of branch, the battery shuts down. Although I have used a stihl battery ( full size) chainsaw, and it was light and powerful and good for 20 minutes. Petrol is the only option in my case. But it's horses for courses. I do have my own gardening and grounds maintenance business so I am biased 🤣

Very suspicious prices which you wouldn't expect to pay for just a single battery. So many don't even have brand names on ebay. Clearly a lot of tool designers have never used a chain saw or trimmed trees. There is a reason saws should be relatively flat on the right (which means oiler cap on the left) Most people are right handed which means the right side of the tool is the tree or trim side (sorry lefties) I give a big fail to every tool with the hinged guard on the right (or any guard at all) Milwaukee clearly gets it. Looking at many of these tool I feel like they are catering to a dumbed down populaiton of tool users. (Yeah, I'm the guy that removes lawyer engineering from some of my tools and gas cans to make them easier and safer to use IMO) One more comment... I get why Stihl gave up on oilers, the only Stihl tool I own is a gas pole saw. I have to store it over a bucket to catch the leaking oil..🤣🤣🤣 Joking aside, the simplicity with no auto oiler makes the tool somewhat appealing to me. I was weaned on chainsaws with a manual oil pump. Damn they were heavy, glad I was younger with a big thumb.
